2024 Mazda CX-5 GS Dashcam Low Voltage Cutoff/Battery Issues?

Hi everyone,

My new CX-5 in Edmonton AB Canada is my favourite :) I love it.

My brother and I have experience installing dashcams front and rear. Did the 2012 (Thinkware Q1000) and 2014 Mazda3 (TW U1000).
They work flawlessly.

We installed a Thinkware Q1000 in my 2024 CX-5 and it's working. The installation process is much more difficult but we got it to work.

The dashcam records but I noticed when we are just looking at the car and playing with features with it off, the dashcam shuts off.
I looked up the events in the app for the cam, and sure enough, the Low Voltage Cutoff feature occurred. This told me, the cam shut off with 12.1 volts from the engine 12V battery.

I've never had this on our Mazda3s and was wondering if any of you have experience with dashcams cutting off? Do I need to get an external battery back? We hardwired everything correctly. But what we noticed was the car's 12V battery doesn't top up. I bought a Napa battery maintainer, charger and it shows we hit 98% and I leave it for hours. Still 98% - nothing changed. The battery is a Panasonic Lithium I believe.

Is my 12V defective? Do I need to replace the battery soon? I don't know how my dealership will react if they see I have a dashcam. I might get blamed and warranty voided?

Regards,

Did it run down after you had spent the time installing the camera software?

My CX had a Panasonic battery, not lithium. Do you have i-Stop?

I left doors, lights, liftgate open and might've drained it. But car starts up fine. I noticed key fob low battery hold near button to start ONCE. But I charged 12v using Napa charger. Won't top 98%.

No I don't believe I have I stop 😲

If you measure the battery voltage directly with DMM what do you see? My CX5 has varying voltages depending on where I measure it, and it is always lower the farther away from the battery. Your cam might be pretty sensitive, but your battery should be 12.6v.

I don't have a voltmeter but I was charging with my charger. Gets like 13.6 charging and with engine running.
I turn on accessory mode and dashcam indicates less than 12v.

It's unlikely your 2024 battery has died...but not impossible.

I don't know about Canada but in USA most auto parts stores will do perform a free test to see if you're battery is good. Without a test like this (done under load) or at least a voltmeter you're going to be guessing about the health of your battery.

Darn it. Might get new winters in October but get battery tested by then. Thanks.

There are a number of threads on parasitic current draw, which is a more likely explanation if I were to guess. I always keep the battery tender/charger ready to go ( I installed a SAE charge cord under the dash ) and monitor the voltage of my CX5, which has a OPtima redtop. It usually drops from 12.6 6 to 12.3 within a week, but sometimes faster if I'm messing around with the doors open, etc. I don't really know why but like you, I've installed some accessories, so I just keep charging it and carry a little booster, which I've never had to use.
The battery test at an auto parts store is quick and easy and should tell you if you have a defective new battery. I don't know if the dealer should complain about the cam, unless you did something that disagrees with the Mazda electronics..
