2018 CX-5 EPB throws error if don't pump brake before engaging

Hi all, hope someone can provide some guidance. I have searched the forum for this particular scenario but not luck hence asking here.

Replaced the rear pads on a 2018 CX-5 which has an EPB. I did put the EPB into service / maintenance mode before and after the service. Also note, this car has not had the TSB performed to get the new calipers.

Now after replacing the rear pads, when engaging the EPB it throws an error on the dash of a solid orange / yellow P symbol, a flashing red P symbol, and the orange / yellow led on the EPB switch is also flashing. If I dis-engage the EPB, the lights goes off.

If I pump the foot brake and then engage the EPB using the EPB switch, the orange / yellow P symbol doesn't come on, only the red P symbol comes on, and the light on the switch is a solid orange / yellow which I belive is normal behaviour (bar needing to pump the foot brake before hand)

I have performed the maintenance mode routine a few times in case it just needs recalibration but no luck either.

Any ideas?

Thank you

EPBs seem to have some strange behaviors! Have you tried bleeding the rear brake lines?

Yup, bleed the rear lines.

It's as if the EPB when doing the calibration when exiting maintenance mode is not doing it correctly even thou the lights go out after exiting maintenance mode. Or it is doing the calibration correctly as it exits the mode but on first use of the EPB it fails.

Did you turn the piston when you press the caliper piston in while in the EPB Maintenance Mode?

Update; the warning lights are not coming on now... how I did it....no idea! Did so many maintenance mode on/off, pumping brake, turn on/off EPB combinations, im not sure what one actually solved it!

Thanks for the update. We’ve seen several reports that they have to enter and exit EPB Maintenance Mode several times to make it work properly, or do the exit part of Maintenance Mode first then enter the mode. Like @Mazdiod2 said earlier, EPBs seem to have some strange behaviors sometimes. Hope your problem has been resolved and EPB warning lights won’t come up again.

I had this happen to me but for a different reason. Try putting the e brake in maintenance mode and then take it out. Sounds like it thinks it already is in maintenance mode so you might have to do an "exit" first.

Indeed. Mine failed multiple times coming out of maintenance mode. Probably took me 20 minutes of trying before it finally succeeded.

The same happened to my 2017 CX-5. I noticed that when trying to exit maintenance mode the motor on the left side was running for too long and only stopped after I got the error. I noticed that the actuator of the EPB was slipping and didn't catch until I helped by slightly depressing the brake. Note that the brake piston was fully retracted for the new pads to fit in.
I repeated the process a few times and finally it worked even without pressing the brake.
The EPB seems to be working fine for now. I love this car but the brakes are crappy. Uneven and premature pad wear is common.
