2018 CX-5 EPB throws error if don't pump brake before engaging

Hi all, hope someone can provide some guidance. I have searched the forum for this particular scenario but not luck hence asking here.

Replaced the rear pads on a 2018 CX-5 which has an EPB. I did put the EPB into service / maintenance mode before and after the service. Also note, this car has not had the TSB performed to get the new calipers.

Now after replacing the rear pads, when engaging the EPB it throws an error on the dash of a solid orange / yellow P symbol, a flashing red P symbol, and the orange / yellow led on the EPB switch is also flashing. If I dis-engage the EPB, the lights goes off.

If I pump the foot brake and then engage the EPB using the EPB switch, the orange / yellow P symbol doesn't come on, only the red P symbol comes on, and the light on the switch is a solid orange / yellow which I belive is normal behaviour (bar needing to pump the foot brake before hand)

I have performed the maintenance mode routine a few times in case it just needs recalibration but no luck either.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Yup, bleed the rear lines.

It's as if the EPB when doing the calibration when exiting maintenance mode is not doing it correctly even thou the lights go out after exiting maintenance mode. Or it is doing the calibration correctly as it exits the mode but on first use of the EPB it fails.

Did you turn the piston when you press the caliper piston in while in the EPB Maintenance Mode?

Update; the warning lights are not coming on now... how I did it....no idea! Did so many maintenance mode on/off, pumping brake, turn on/off EPB combinations, im not sure what one actually solved it!

Thanks for the update. We’ve seen several reports that they have to enter and exit EPB Maintenance Mode several times to make it work properly, or do the exit part of Maintenance Mode first then enter the mode. Like @Mazdiod2 said earlier, EPBs seem to have some strange behaviors sometimes. Hope your problem has been resolved and EPB warning lights won’t come up again.

I had this happen to me but for a different reason. Try putting the e brake in maintenance mode and then take it out. Sounds like it thinks it already is in maintenance mode so you might have to do an "exit" first.

Indeed. Mine failed multiple times coming out of maintenance mode. Probably took me 20 minutes of trying before it finally succeeded.

The same happened to my 2017 CX-5. I noticed that when trying to exit maintenance mode the motor on the left side was running for too long and only stopped after I got the error. I noticed that the actuator of the EPB was slipping and didn't catch until I helped by slightly depressing the brake. Note that the brake piston was fully retracted for the new pads to fit in.
I repeated the process a few times and finally it worked even without pressing the brake.
The EPB seems to be working fine for now. I love this car but the brakes are crappy. Uneven and premature pad wear is common.

Exact same thing happened to my 2018 CX5 after change rear brake pad. EPB will failed with parking sign flashing occasionally. Sent to Mazda SC and they found EPB motor and piston screw worn out, due to improper setting when they remove the caliper while changing brake pad. Say this is common issue as the setting quite delicate and you have to know what you are doing else will result in a very expensive replacement...

The reason for this is the mechanism of the electric motor is slightly worn and won't bite when the piston is fully retracted. If you push it out a bit by applying the brakes it will work and calibrate itself.
The thing is they cut some corners to reduce costs and put some cheap brakes. It's a common problem, just like the failing rear seatbelt retractors. I wouldn't expect them to go bad just after 70k km.

Thanks for the tip. Mazda just say it is damage beyond repair (motor gear and piston), not sure how true is it and if they even tried to calibrate it. When you say cut corner with cheap brake, do you mean brake pad? I changed non-original brake pad but doubt this be the reason as it should affect durability & braking performance, not messing up the EPB?

Braking performance is good, but brake pads tend to wear off too soon and unevenly.
Mazda service will rip you off. Search on YouTube how to enter/exit service mode and the EPB will calibrate itself. If the motor doesn't catch when you exit service mode (it will run for too long and you'll get an error on the bord), repeat the process but first pump the brake pedal to let the piston come out a bit.
The whole brake system if the CX-5 is garbage, not only the EPB. I need to replace the front pads just as often, every 15.000 km or so.

I did the service mode fixing actually, it seems working fine for a while but after a few round the warning sign came back again (not every time, more like 2 out of 10 time when I use parking brake). So I send Mazda for checking and as you mentioned, their easiest solution is always to replace everything. I am sending to another mechanic for second opinion. Let's see how.
And I agree the whole brake system is crap. Mine front pad also won't last long
