2017 Touring to 2018 Grand Touring

cylinder deactivation is the one can’t be improved on long-term reliability from any efforts due to the natural of design. Variable displacement automobile engine technology on cylinder deactivation simply doesn’t make sense for longevity.

Like someone else said, let it go and give the new owner a break. Let him enjoy the new ride.
As for your assertions and conclusions, there is no evidence yet that the 2018 Mazda cylinder deactivation technology is going to be a problem. No proof whatsoever.
You can't base your conclusions on something GM or Ford, or anyone else, did 10 years ago.
Same with the variable displacement and variable compression engines coming out. No history or proof (either way) that they will be a problem or a success.
Come back in ten years and talk about it then.

17 Touring (colors other than white / red / grey) with Pep is the zenith of CX5. Perfect trim, best bang for buck. Now that I paid attention to the wheels the 19s look uglier, 17s look so classy.

How can you say that the 17 Touring with Preferred Equipment Package is the perfect trim? Have you had both cars like me? Let me tell you, when you step into the GT you feel a more sense of refinement and it has a ton of features (safety and fun). Also, best bang for your buck...I'm literally paying 7 McDonald's meals more a month for the GT. Yes it a lease but that's what I choose as I love a new car every 3 years.

He says "best bang for buck" which is true. 17 Touring, and PEP was only like what, another $750ish package?

Best reason in the world to lease, especially now that features are changing so fast. Sure it costs more than keeping your car as long as you can, but I'll never buy another.
Life's too short.

Speaking of cylinder deactivation - what's the easiest way to tell it's being deactivated or activated depending on how you look at it? One thing I noticed with my '18 CX-5 is it'll sometimes drop to a very low RPM and almost give a 'rumble' effect. Like it's struggling for air. This tends to happen if I let off the gas and engage it lightly.

Here it is: the first complaint about CD.
Get ready.

From what I have read the deactivation kicks in on low load cruising operations so say 30 mph on a city arterial. I haven’t seen anything really technical about it but if you search YouTube for Autogefhl Mazda CX-5 petrol you will come across a review where the driver notes he cannot tell when CD is activated or not. In fact he loved the engine.

I have the 2018 w/cylinder deactivation. I believe the mpg gain is minimal, like 1mpg or whatever. That is totally not worth switching from a 17 to an 18, I actually wasn't aware that was the one major change or I might have tried to look for one of the leftover 2017s which would already be around a 3k rebate because of the "all 2017s must go!" gimmick used by dealers to get the one year old ones out.

In my opinion more/less moving parts have more likelihood of issues. A good example are the adaptive LED headlights (hopefully this doesn't start another internet fight) but anyhow, they have motors and those could go out and you'll have a costly repair on your hands.

Best case scenario: if they fail in the straight ahead position, a repair might not be necessary.
I must admit they way they look around corners is wonderful.

That doesn't sound "normal" but maybe that was a one time freak thing but CD shouldn't cause the engine to shudder unless it doesn't disengage.

Running on 2 cylinders would be like running at 80HP which would cause the engine to lug or shudder if put under load.

If it happens again, take it to the dealership. Might have been a one time fluke

I have an 18 CX-5 GT with premier. Trip B was set from the day I bought the car. Trip B reads just under 3200 miles with 29.5 MPG. I'm not sure if Cylinder Deactivation helps achieve this, cause I have never owned another CX5 before this.

With CD, 2018 CX-5 AWD gained 0 mpg and FWD gained 1 mpg over 2017s on EPAs combined MPG!

From the description - CD will be beneficial for certain style of drivers and certain commute types.
In my opinion it will reward steady drivers using CC more. If you are static at 50 mph on relatively flat road - it should net good mpg returns.

Sadly EPA #s mean nothing. My FWD will beat combined by 2 mpg. It will never hit 33 on highway unless i drive down from Pikes Peak at highway speeds.

Yeah I saw that cylinder deactivation didn't make much of a difference/if any at all. Just makes it sound like you're getting something an older model didn't get, but it might just be added headaches if the technology turns into problems down the road.

I just traded my 3 month old Touring for a Grand Touring. I was in for service and the dealer "made me an offer I could not refuse". Could not be happier with my choice.

Hey OP - congratulations!

Enjoy your new CX-5 and don't listen to any negative comments here about it.

All that matters is you got it and are enjoying it!

(cheers2)

Just curious What is the monthly payment for a CX5 on a 3 year lease. I have no frame of reference. I buy my cars outright so I don't know about payments. (I make payments to my bank to save for the next car.)

Why are we assuming all dealers suck at washing cars? My Saab nor Volvo / Mercedes dealer didn't / doesn't.
