2017 Mazda CX-5 Crash Test

Airbag discharge gas

The bags are coated in cornstarch so they don't stick together on deployment (I've also heard talc before, but I think cornstarch is safer and more common now). The nitrogen blows it around.

Thanks for the information :)

That side impact is gnarly. Note to self, my little one's diono car seat will be installed in the center. I thought about putting her behind the passenger but no way.

It actually does OK. Have a look at the indentation, seems roughly the same as the drivers door. The B Pillar takes the bulk of the hit

I know it performed well, still a bit hard to view/imagine with our precious "cargo in the back".

Have you physically put the seat behind the middle at the dealer? Reason I ask is that I can't get comfy enough to drive with it in the middle, but ole gal can, so unfortunately it still goes on the passenger. I think I will try today what it would be like front facing when the time comes, and give the middle a go as well again for the helluvit.

A nice by-product of them installing a thicker windscreen to reduce NVH!
Acoustic windshield used on new CX-5 is not necessary thicker than regular windshield. The difference is the sound deadening laminated film instead is used in between two layers of glass. Of course the windshield didn't crack should be credited to the integrity of CX-5's body structure, not much to the windshield itself.

Side crash test clip now online:
So both frontal and side crash videos are from US NHTSA's crash test. I thought you're posting Australian ANCAP crash test videos for some reason ⋯ ;)

True but there is also a risk of something coming through the front window right for the middle of the car

They actually said the front window is thicker. The side front windows are acoustic
