Got the daylight kit today from Japan:

I won't have time to mess with it until this weekend, but I found a better description translated from Japanese:

"The front position lights at the same time as the engine starts! exclusive use's original daylight unit It is a kit mainly for using the LED position lamp as a daytime light. ━ ━ ━ product features ━━━ ■ One switch allows ON / OFF of daylight ■ Since a dedicated connector is used, there is no need to cut the wiring! ■ By turning on the daytime lamp, Improve visibility of the vehicle to improve safety Improve safety by turning on the switch ■ Position lamp lights at the same time as the engine starts! ■ Since the genuine connector is used, it is easy to install! This DAYLIGHT UNIT SYSTEM By installing KIT it is possible to light only the genuine position lamp as Daytime light during daytime. Since genuine switch function priority design, light switch is auto, small, even at the position of head light, there is no influence on the vehicle at all when using. ■ With instruction manual with image!"

Also, you have to remember that while DRL's are allowed in the US but not required, they are prohibited in Japan. Not sure how this Japanese mod gets around their DRL ban unless the ban is just against headlights as DRL's as this is a genuine Mazda accessory sold there.
Anyway, I have disabled my current DRL's, so my car is set up just like a stock Japanese car. If all goes well, I should be able to hit the on switch (which is just like the cheap looking little toggle switch that comes with the interior footwell lighting) and the led halo should come on when I start the car. As a bonus, i can still turn all of my lights off if i need to.
But most importantly, I should be able to set the lights to auto and leave this new toggle switch set to on. When I start the car and drive during the day, just the led halo will be lit with no tail lights or parking lights. Then when it gets dark, headlights and tail lights will come on with the halo. Also, for anyone interested in the grille illumination kit, once you have done this mod, all the wiring is ready for that so it would be easy to add the led grille accent if you wanted.

Where did you order this kit from? Japanparts or some place else? Looking forward to your write-up once it's installed.

Looks like the kit does provide Signature accent scrips DRL function many people prefer without headlights on. Yeah please let us know the result and a detailed write-up with many pictures would be much appreciated!

BTW, how much did Japanparts.com charge you for this DRL kid including shipping?

Photos of the parts outside the packaging would also be good!

wow. so many different variations between different regions and so confusing. I take it BigTex got his lighting kit due to not not having a GT spec CX-5 hence getting the Signature LED DRLs?

So lower spec CX-5s don't come with any DRLs whatsoever but come with LED parkers? Since the position of the LED parkers are on the inner position of the headlamp, why not set them as DRLs as in older CX-5 and new lower spec CX-9s?

They have DRL's but they only work with the headlights on.

Lower spec CX-5's here have no DRLs be it halogen or LED. Hence Bigtex's part would fix this issue.

Mine is a GT.

My headlights work the same as yours, always ON. I think the headlights are also the DRLs for 17. My headlights are on all the time, day or night, rain or shine. I also think it's weird, but I've seen written in the manual the phrase headlights/daytime running lights with a slash, as if they were one and the same. I have searched for any settings to modify this but cannot find one.

Bigtex has an accessory from Mazda Japan to turn only the DRLs and not headlights with it. Lets see his review - then others can order.

In North America the headlights are on at a lower power output than full headlights as a part of the DRL system alongside the "signature lighting" strips in the headlight on the GT models, and alongside another lower power LED bulb in non-GT models. If you have AFS on top-spec GT the system is disabled when in DRL mode. I would assume the auto level control is also disabled but I can't confirm.

When headlights turn on they brighten to normal headlight output level and AFS, if so equipped, is activated.

Big Tex is modifying with an accessory which, if it works, should disable the headlight portion of his DRL while retaining all other normal functions of his headlight system. The unknown, until install is confirmed, is whether this kit is compatible with NA vehicles.

It will also have DRL's on at all times regardless of the position of the headlight switch provided the DRL switch is on.

This means as soon as the CX-5 starts, they come on.

Ya it sounds like it's just an override to the signature lighting to give it IGN+ power. My guess is that to make it work the DRL in the car settings will have to be turned off, like the native market for this kit, then install the kit to override that and turn the signature lighting back on.

Just a guess though, I haven't seen the instructions or schematics.

Think Bigtex will advise us how he did it after he installs them

I'll let you know how it turns out but I don't have time to get started until Saturday. Install does not look easy and I'm not even sure what is going to happen or if the connections will match up on a US spec car. Pretty sure the front end is going to have to come off because the harness clips in and runs across just in front of the lower radiator. Also looks like it ties in to the driver's side fog for some reason? This could be way more trouble than it is worth.

Didn't the brief description say it was separate connection?

I feel for you. It's quite ridiculous that you have to buy a kit just so that only the LED DRLs are ON instead of ON with the headlights.
