2016 Headlights replaced today

You're referring to more advanced Mazda i-ActiveSense Adaptive LED Headlamps (ALH) available in the worldwide but not in the US. Our LED headlights on CX-5 are still using old fashioned AFS with motors turning the reflectors left-and-right, as well as up-and-down. They have single-point LED light source which looks like traditional halogen or xenon instead of ugly LED array headlights found on the Acura!

Hey, no hating on the Jewel eyes! They are one of the best LED headlights out there. The LED headlights on the CX5 are no where as good as the HID.

The problem with the US, is we have a law saying there had to be a high and low beam. So with the new active matrix systems, there is no specific high and low. Wish the DOT would get off their ass and change laws quicker to allow safer systems. I sadly see bmw laser high beams being allowed before active headlights.

Btw: you can feel the heat on the led headlights coming out the front. There is enough light output for this. The rest of the heat sink is in the housing and not helping. I don't think there will be any more of an ice build up issue than anyone else. This isn't comparing tiny leds to tiny bulbs. These are high power setups.

Even household LED light bulbs get fairly warm or mildly hot depending on your tolerance... I've never really attempted to determine housing temps of my HIDs over the years.

I wonder if the LEDs actually run the same temp or hotter than the HIDs?

Well. In short, yes and no. Ha!
HID bulbs are very hot. It's an electrical arc! But that is the only heat source. LED s get warm. But have giant heatsink out the back of the unit that draw the heat away. That heatsink and driver module get very hot. It will burn you. But it's enough to pull the heat from the led enough for it to work.

I have the same problem. Both headlights.
I had an appointment this past Monday with Koeppel Mazda service center to have it "cleaned".
The service manager said this is the first time he saw such a thing. He told me it can't be cleaned and needs to be replaced. He needed authorization to do the job.
He had me call Mazda in California to submit a claim and have a district manager to look at the headlight.
The next day a district manager was there and I brought my car in to have it looked at. He authorized a replacement.
I'm waiting now for the parts to be ordered and delivered.
Service manager Andrew and the district manager were very cool guys. Thanks men!

Got the call yesterday that the replacements came in. Have an appointment for this Tuesday.

Done. In and out. Service department smooth as silk. Headlights nice and clean and shiny.
The work order and invoice termed it as "interior coding drips" and "inside lens imperfection seems film on inside lens streaking".

Looks like a thin inner lens lining is falling apart. This got me to look at my own '14 GT with a magnifying glass and can't see anything like that.

Just an update, emailed the service manager at my local dealer a few weeks ago and brought the car in today for him to take a look at the issue with my '16 with the LEDs. He looked at it and authorized the replacement. The dealer had them in stock and replaced them right away. Took about 1.5 hours though, but the new housings look nice and clear. And yes, they're around $1k/ea.

It makes me wonder if the problem is isolated to Mazdas with LEDs only. I can't recall this to be a recurrent issue coming up for Mazda's with HIDs. 2 issues I can think of to be the issue. 1-There may be a different supplier or manufacturing process for LED models as the lenses appear to be "darker". Whether that is true or not all lenses usually have a UV layer in the inside of the lenses. What we see peeling away could be that layer found in the inside of the lenses. I had a similar manufacturer defect in my Depo BMW headlights. 2- LEDs could possibly give off more radiation than halogen or xenon lighting thus deteriorating the improperly embedded said layer in the inside of the lenses although I cannot prove this.

One thing is for sure, when nearing the 3 year mark check those headlights for peeling/cloudiness.

I've looked at those pictures I actually couldn't see anything wrong from those defect headlight units. Should I look for peeling layers from those inner chrome finished reflectors?

Acura had a recall a year ago about peeling lamination in headlights on the RLX. I wouldn't be surprised if these components are actually sourced from the same third party supplier.

I would rather keep them as-is and then before the 3 year mark is over - change them. At least I can get another 2 years worth with them (after 3 years). Else, it'll again cloud within 3 years. I wonder if Mazda will replace again........

We have a hazy something slowly growing on the interior surface of clear turn signal section of the right tail light of our 2016 GT. :(

My 2016 CX-5 GT's headlights are scheduled for replacement next week. Started seeing streaks/haziness in both headlights last month - the dealership assessed the lights and said they would contact Mazda re. issue. 4 days later, I get a call from the service department saying "the parts are in" and they want to set up an appointment. I assume there is a known issue, and that is why Mazda is replacing the headlights, no questions asked.

I had my CX5 in for an inspection sticker and the fuel filler pipe recall this morning. So I asked them to look at my headlights while they were at it due to all the crud on the inside of the housings. A few hours later I got a call telling me that they have placed an order for new LED headlights.

I'm very pleased that I wasn't given the run-around and that Mazda is replacing them free of charge.

Mine are getting replaced next week. They have the headlights already. I am pleased because I live in PanamaCity Republic of Panama and it's not like in the US where consumers are well protected.
