2014 Mazda CX-5 vs 2013 Ford Escape

Well, we all have our opinions and that is fine, but I think you all might be justifying things a bit for Mazda. It is a natural thing to want to feel that the purchase you made is the best one, but as I stated, compared to both the Ford and Toyota's I have previously owned, the Mazda is subpar on SOME points. Overall, I think the CX-5 is awesome, but truthfully, they failed on maybe 5% of their quality points.

Just one more example: When I bought my Tacoma, I got in, plugged my iPod into the USB port and it worked like a charm, first time every time. In the CX-5, I think we are all aware of the iPod issues. It doesn't resume playback if you turn off the stereo or even switch to FM and then back without unplugging the USB and waiting for the iPod to reload.

I'll be putting in a new head unit this weekend to cure it, but there goes $450 and half a day that I shouldn't have had to spend.

IMHO, I don't consider the give around shifter or rear headliner give as examples of poor quality. These 2 areas are not normal touch areas and are not worth adding additional weight, bulk and expense.

They might be considered examples of lightweight/Skyactiv construction.

Exactly! I'm not sure why someone would be pushing on the headliner or the area around the shifter. After 8,000 miles I was not aware these areas were different from any of my previous cars.

The stereo in my CX-5 does not exhibit that behavior. It always starts playing the iPod at the place it last left-off.

That's true. The iPod connection is unreliable, and TomTom isn't the best nav system. Hopefully they'll come out with improvement for the center touchscreen unit in the future. The car isn't perfect, but all the critical aspects of the car are reliable and won't freeze/crash all at once because they're controlled by a single program.

Really? You are the person that checked every nut and bolt on the car before you bought it and yet you never noticed the cheap feel of the plastic and headliner? Interesting.

Absolutely, I'm actually planning to document the whole procedure with pics to help out anyone that attempts this in the future.

The unit I bought is a JVC KW-AV61

It will still work with the backup cam, plus it plays DVDs, which I really don't care much about, but it came with it, so just a bonus I guess.

The only drawback is that I'll be losing several of the Bose speakers because it has 9 and the new unit is only set up for 4. I'm going to get as many of them working as I can without compromising the sound quality, but I know I'll have to let a few go. Really who needs 9 speakers in a car this size anyway? I'm sure the Bose speakers will still sound great.

***EDIT*** After getting into the installation, it turned out that the factory back up camera does NOT work with this unit (or any other, according to Crutchfield). See my post #61 in this thread for more details.

Hey TreyP that will be awesome if you can post the step by step. I have the touring with plain speakers and changed the 4 speakers, added an amp and kicker hideaway sub and sounds awesome, I have 4 speakers and two twitters now so that should work.

I took some time to remove the virus but now MSE isn't detecting any more.

There was two Trojans, and one "back door", what ever they are.

Anyway it all good now, that's the first time I've ever been "attacked" by clicking on a link, but I was warned.

Your computer may have other unrelated issues. The site is well respected and appears benign to my two computers.

The site is sponsored by advertising and some Web Protection software might respond to that but it shouldn't do anything malicious.

If you really think TrueDelta.com infected your computer you should notify the founder of the website (his name is Karesh I believe). He is a fellow Mazda owner and has been a Mazdas247 member fro over 8 years. Here is a link to one of his threads:

He has an excellent reputation and would want to know if there was a security issue with his website.

But I think your computer likely has other, unrelated, issues. I've been using TrueDelta.com on a regular basis for the past few years and have never had a single issue with any virus.

I remember back in the day when there weren't things called iPods, and you didn't connect anything to your car's stereo system except maybe a cassette.

Sorry, but iPod connectivity isn't something I care about, nor do I evaluate it when I'm buying a car.
Came with telephone bluetooth connectivity.
I don't own either one, so I don't care if they work or not.

Besides, those things only go about ruining a drive if someone tries to call me.
When I'm in my car, its about driving, not about taking my mind off of driving.

Being that I reported the virus also as well as being a computer manager who own over 40 domains as well as being a website developer and I host other domains on a windows 2008 server I rent...believe me...we are the last to know if our server has a virus.

But I don't get it I have an iPhone5, connect to my 2013 CX-5 and my 2014 6 (same system as the 14' CX-5) and both have no problems starting off right where it left. I think this may have something to do with your phone settings and not the sound system in the car, just sayin...

It's not just me though, the iPod issue is a well-documented issue. It apparently does not happen on the 13 models, only the 14s.

I haven't heard that it affects iPhones anyway, only iPods.
