Has anyone found an after market cargo cover that does not attach to the lift gate?

Prob not bc what are you going to attach it to when it is open?
There are no holders on the side to hold it.

Had a vehicle before this where I pulled out the cover and did a side attachment and liked that alot, was hoping an after market would have something like that where you could install side clips. Reaching up to to clip the cover doesn't appeal to me. Just old school I guess. If it my vehicle came with it I could learn to like it, but if I have a choice that could be different.

my audi wagon came with the one you described, I wanted the same thing. but after using the OEM one I kind of like it more, is more convenient, even when loaded to the top it has enough slack to keep it covered on top of the stuff...I hope that makes sense.

I like the fact that the hatch lifts the cover out of the way when putting stuff in or taking stuff out of the hatch area. That way you don't have to retract it or reach back under it to get at things. In the 8 months I've had mine I think I've unclipped it twice. And I rarely even notice it is there. As pt00323i mentioned it is also flexible enough that if things get stacked just a bit too high it will give.
The only downside is they didn't make it so it could be snapped into a storage spot when not in use and Mazda has gone out of their way with bright yellow stickers and tags to let you know it isn't a good idea to keep it in the vehicle if it isn't in use. My guess is because it could become quite a projectile, if not snapped in place, in a collision.

That's probably because you have a spare wheel. In european versions we don't have it and there is the storage spot you are talking about. Don't know if it's better or not...

that finally explains why ours almost looks like there would be a place to store it but there isn't room.
