2010 Speed 3 First Impressions

Just had the chance to spend 35 minutes driving the 2010 Speed. I currently own a 2008 in Metro Grey w/ Alcantatra seats and was thinking of trading. My car also has the Mazdaspeed CAI, short shifter and upgraded front engine mount.

Exterior- Strictly a matter of personal taste. The smiley face doesn't look as bad in person but the car is definitely more refined/slicker than the previous model. Unfortunately, to me it looks more like a cross between a Toyota Matrix and a Subaru. I would not trade based on the new look and prefer the older body style.

Interior- Mazda did something interesting here. They eliminated the Sport and GT models and now have 1 model. they only offer 1 interior but have base priced the car at $23,900- less than the old GT but more than the Sport. Unfortunately, the new interior is also a compromise. In contrast to my 2008 with alcantatra which feels rich almost like an Audi knock off the 2010 feels cheap. The seats are not as padded or comfortable and the trim is a hideous reddish flourescent type material. The plastic is OK but not as rich feeling as the piano black trim in the 08. The piano black is also used in the GT version of the 2010 CX7 and it looks good. I could not live with the seats or the trim color and would not trade based on that.

Performance- In objective terms the 2010 is better in every way but one than the previous model. It feels quieter, more refined and almost all of the torque steer present in the 08 is gone. The ride is more compliant, less jerky and smoother than the 08. It now rides like an Audi/BMW knock off which for most people will be good. However, as a result the car lacks the "edge/attitude" of the 08. It just doesn't seem as much fun. The shifter is still a problem but that is easily solved with any of the short shift kits available. If your preference is for more refinement, compliance, while still getting good handling etc you should love the new car. I prefer a little of the edge and some of the crazy sounds ( whooses of the CAI etc ) and characteristics of the old one. But gain that is personal taste.

Overall- The new car is in many ways (save the seats and trim) much improved over the old one. But is improvement better? Depends on what you want. I prefer my 1990 Miata to the new one but objectively the new one is improved and better. You can't go wrong with the new version but for me I prefer the edge/attitude of the previous version

Would be curious to hear what others think.

I just stopped into my dealership today and saw they have a Velocity Red '10 MS3 Sport for 23,495. It came with what looked like leather bolsters that are on the GT of 07-09. I was salivating over it and tempted trading in my '08.5 right there but my salesman told me no because I bought it only a year ago! Sooo much nicer in person compared to pictures! Didn't test drive it though since he had customers calling and such but wow, it looks amazing!

If you like a red car the Velocity Red is a great color. The Liquid Silver also looks great. I was not as fond of the Black as it took away all the car's shape.

Was never a fan of red really but the VR looked beautiful! Thats the first one I've actually seen in person so idk what the other colors look like. There are 3 Speed dealers within 20 miles of me and thats the first I've seen.

OP- I just re-read your first post, I could swear I saw on the sticker it said Sport model?

I just bought a Black Mazda3 Sport...

Test drove it today for a second time and it feels tight, powerful and looks sexy! I had a Mazda3 GT Sedan 2006 and was apprehensive about parting with it...but I've fallen in love with the 2010 Sport...I'm very happy with it and I pick it up on Wednesday!

Check out my blog about my Mazda3 if you're interested! http://calgarydrivers.wordpress.com

There is only 1 model and 1 trim level for 2010 and it called Sport. The only significant option is the Tech Package which is Navigation. The Nav screen is very small and hard to read especially while driving. Any small GPS or App on iPhone would probably work better and cost less. I think the package also includes Sirrius but that would be a lot to pay for satellite radio.

Understood now, thats why it said such. I dont really care for navi, I use my phone if I need directions somewhere, i find it an overpriced expensive waste of space, give me gauges instead! Although boost is located bewteen speed and RPM's. I assume they should all come standard with Sirius and a 6 month trial subscription. I know my '08.5 Sport did.

So Mazda made it look a lot more rice but drive like some tame sedan? It's like two different teams designed this car, where one wanted it to be EVO and the other wanted it to be some Acura sedan.

Test drive of 2010 Speed 3

I agree quite a bit with the first post here. I went to the dealer where I bought my 2008 GT, they had 4 of the 2010's on the lot. The new Velocity Red is a huge improvement over the previous red. As far as looks, this will be a personal opinion so I will concentrate more on performance versus my 2008 GT. Ah who am I kidding, of course I will comment on the looks as well!
To me it looked like a 2008 S3 had collided with the Mazda CX7 somewhat. I love the CX7, but overall to me the car looked a little less sexy, except for the hood scoop, which I really liked. My 2008 has door moldings to protect it from other cars. Something I had not paid much attention to until I saw the 2010, which does not have it. Hard to describe but it just looked "boxier" in some ways. Some of this was appealing to me, some of it not.
Interior wise the first thing that was a huge let down for me was no red stitching on the seats. When I bought my S3 I was actually going to buy a CX7, saw my S3 under the lights in the showroom and it caught my eye. Once I opened the door and saw the seats with the red stitching I was sold.
The dash looks very good. I still like the looks of mine better, but if I had never seen mine I would think the 2010 was awesome, but it looks more like the controls of other model mazdas. The Nav screen is small, but I liked the fact it is up high by the windshield as you would not have to move your eyes as far away from the road to see it. And for newbie S3 drivers not used to the power and FWD this is important as we all know. The dash covers the screen somewhat so it will cut down on glare. I had no trouble seeing the display when I test drove the car. Overall, IMHO the interior is much less sporty and custom looking in the 2010.
Performance: Let me start by saying I have done no mods to me S3... yet. The dealer had already installed cold air intake on the car before I bought it, so keep this in mind. When I drove the 2010 and got it up to about 3,000 rpm and punched it, to me, nothing happened. In my 2008 you feel the rush of being pushed back into the seats and, well you all know how it feels... awesome. There was not as much of this with the 2010. Now it did not have Cold Air Intake, but I would not think it would make that much difference, maybe I am wrong here. Just to be sure I was not biased I threw the keys to my S3 to the salesguy ( cool dude, ex marine, races cars, knew his stuff no B.S. ) and asked him to drive mine to compare. He punched mine in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and immediately agreed that mine had much more punch and acceleration to it.
Steering and overall ride of the 2010 was much smoother, but for me, not necessarily a good thing. It handled well, but did not feel as "tight". Yes at low speeds the steering wheel was easier to turn, but who cares, don't plan on going slow very often!! There was much less "torque steer' with the 2010, but then again it didn't get up and go like my 2008 did. This will of course be personal opinion, but to me the 2010 did not feel nearly as sporty. The The shifting was better. I was told Mazda made inprovements to dampen road noise, and I could tell a definite difference. The 2010 was quieter as far as road noise. When opening and closing the driver door the 2010 felt "more expensive" I have always felt like my 2008 felt a little "cheap" and "plastic" when opening and closing the door, so advantage 2010 here.
I went to the dealer open minded, but I knew if I was impressed I would have traded right then and there if they had one with NAV built in. I am glad I went, looked, and test drove. To summarize my 2008 will be with me for a long time to come, and I will just put money towards mods instead of trading for a 2010.

I know this is slightly off topic but... your salesman told you no on a trade cause you bought it less than a year ago? :bs: ... Everytime I pull my '09 into a dealer to get the oil changed they are always trying to get me to upgrade. Sounds like your salesman couldn't be bothered taking you for a drive or assumed you would not be buying.

My family has bought 11 cars from this salesman and 12 from this dealer over the past 24 years. Plus numerous referral sales to him as well. His reasoning was probably because I would take a beating with what is left on my loan and what they would give me for a trade. Looking out for a customer is what he was doing in my opinion. Not trying to make a sale and kill me with a $500 payment a month.

The tech package includes:
1. 242 Watt Bose Centerpoint 10-speaker surround sound audio system
2. In-Dash 6-disc CD changer (mp3 compatible)
3. Sirius Satellite Raido (free 6 month subscription)
4. Full Color MID (what's an MID?) with compact navigation. (The nav system talks. There's no need to look at it)
5. Perimeter Alarm
6. Advance Keyless System
7. Push button start

MSRP: $1,895

I think
MID = Multi information display

Correct me if I'm wrong.

iPhone GPS is really hard to use when driving.

Had a chance to go look at 2010 MS3 yesterday in NH. It was the velocity red but no tech package. It definitely looks a lot better in person, and stands out from a regular 3 which to me is a plus. The interior, however, feels very cramped and overdone. All the red accents and plastics were a distraction even without driving the car. The dealer wouldn't let me drive the car, giving me BS reasons like it doesnt have the tech package that I want so I won't feel comfortable in the car and also that they don't want to put miles on it since customers will try to ask for a discount. He did let me urn the car on, what a surprise, I though he was going to say they were trying to save gas. When I turned it on, I was expecting a nice roar like in my speed, but boy was I disapointed. The car was very quite even with dual exhaust and didn't sound like a performance car at all. Like I said, I didn't get a chance to drive car, and maybe that will change my mind, but right now I am definitely disapointed, I guess its true that the new ms3 was leaned towards the mass market vs the enthusiast :(
