2010 Mazda5 Sport 2nd gear grind

Pulled and broken down because of a 1-2 crunch?!? Good God, isn't that a little extreme? Did anyone even discuss the mileage on the current fluid or anything? Shifter bushings and linkage? Dropping a tranny or engine is the last thing I would want going on with my car. There must be more information that we don't have.

Its the synchros. When they pulled the trans, they showed me the damaged parts. You could see the wear.

I must say that the trans in the Miata is great to begin with. I usually only ever use the best ofthe best with my car so I figured I would try the swap. The motorcraft fluid was immediately apparent. I did the swap at around 6,000mi I think. The car has almost 9,000mi at this point and seems to be getting better.

Reviving this thread... I've started having a 2nd gear grinding with my 2008, it happens mostly while turning or during very hot days (nothing scary though). I also owned a 2006 but never had the problem. Only thing, tranny fluid is overdue so I'll give it a change and report back...

My 2012 has just started having this issue; I thought it was me trying to change gears to quickly but unless I basically notch the gear in it will grind. Sucks a bit.

Got it done early this week and I have not been able to replicate it since. The Mazda folks took it for a "test-drive" after servicing and did not find anything unusual (whatever that means)

For what is worth, I have around 47k miles

I hope it's the end of it

Make sure you flush the brake fliud and bleed the clutch slave.

Mazda OE fluids don't last long...

Funny that you mention it, that is next on the list, brake fluid starts looking greenish, but you are right. I know at least one Acura owner who owns a 2008 Acura TL (6MT) and it's well known about the 3rd gear grinding. Many owners have changed for a better fluid (ACDelco/GM Synchromesh) and it seems to have mitigated the problem. Further investigation is due if the problem persists

It seems that the 2012+ 6MT is the same as the 2006-2010 5MT, albeit the extra gear (even the same gear ratios). How many miles do you have in yours?

I may be revisiting the dealer soon. The shifting has been flawless but I am not getting a bit of gear whine in 5th gear. right between 65-75mph, throttle partial on get a whistle from the firewall. Can be heard at similar loads in 5th gear only. May swap in some Ford elixir if they recommend a fluid swap. Doubt that's the issue though, it was just replaced last year.

Hello,

I've just recently bought our Mazda5 from a Mazda dealer, its done 61k, Very very clean & has a Full Mazda service history - last service was done 2k ago, however hardly done any millage in the last year. Apparently it had the transmission fluid change last service.

When the car is left overnight and started from cold, changing to 2nd always results in a "crunch" from the gearbox. I can't make it not crunch, there appears to be some resistance whilst changing from 1st to second. I do find it hard to get into 1st when cold as well. All of the rest of the gears feel fine. After 15 minutes the crunch seems to go away and then feels normal.

The car is back with the dealer and I've asked them to take a look at it. They said they've adjusted the cable? Just feels like I'm being fobbed off.

^^ My 2 cents, personal experience. As I mentioned earlier, I owned a 2006 and I currently own a 2008. I drove both for about 3-4 years, and I could tell that the 2008 was a bit rougher (i.e. higher resistance, louder shifts) when cold, especially shifting into 1st, 2nd and 5th gear, but yes, once warmed up it goes away

The dealership finished mine today (TGFW!); second gear, second gear synchro and first gear synchro. Hopefully I have time to grab it tomorrow.

Taking mine in today for the same problem I hope it gets fixed without having to argue over it my service dept don't seem too friendly :(
