2008 Speed3 fuel filter

When I took the car in at about 30k miles, I asked the service guy about changing the fuel filter.

He looked it up - it did not fill me with confidence that he had to look it up - and then told me that it was located inside the fuel pump which in turn was inside or atop the fuel tank and that replacing it was not normal maintenance. Doing so would require _removing_ the fuel tank and be very expensive.

I have to tell you, I was really surprised at that! I recently found and downloaded the Shop Manuals for both the first and second generation Mazdaspeed3 and saw that the fuel filter was indeed inside the fuel pump, in or on the gas tank but found no recommendation for any change interval.

What's your take on this? Do folks not change their fuel filters in this car??? Sound like it would be a _very_ expensive maintenance item if they did.

there might be two fuel filters. not sure about us. but alot of cars run intank pumps and filters that are a unit , and then another filter between the tank and the motor's injection system. In the olde days and olde cars rust and stuff would get into the tank from return lines and feed lines so replacing filter was a maintenance item.
Now is microns and fuel systems are robust. Unless of course you live in Rochester NY salt capital of the world.
I think you are fine. But I am not a Mazda tech.
I hope we can get some more response here it a good question to be asked!

Thanks for chiming in on this question. Would love to have some feedback from someone who knows for sure if there is indeed a secondary filter; i.e., one in addition to the one in the gas tank.
