I just bought an 02 P5 auto w/ 67k. I have read some of the past discussions about the horrible mpg of the auto P5. I was wondering if anyone had an update or anything not in the old posts about the issue. The best that I've gotten has been 17! and I don't drive it too hard.. any help would great.

Full tank I range from 300-335 Miles.
Mostly city driving, stop and go!

uhhhhhh.......17?! I've gotten 19 once, with a roof rack, bikes and averaging 90.

Is everything running smoothly? Check tire pressure. Also, your mileage is going to suffer in the bitter cold of winter. I average 28-30 in ideal temperatures, but closer to 23 in the winter.

And not to offend you, but are you sure you're calculating correctly?

17 seems way too low... However, there are lots of factors that can affect your mileage. How many miles do you drive each day? Lots of short trips? Mostly stop and go traffic? Tire pressure too low? Dirty air filter? Letting the car warm up for too long? Too much dead weight in the trunk? Spark plugs heading south? Maybe a tune up and oil change will do the trick. :)

I keep tire pressure at 35. Thats what I've done with all of my cars. Everything seems to be running smooth. I drive about 40 miles each way and it's half highway/ half city. I left the dealership with a half tank. I filled up, and 260 miles later I'm back at the pump. I get my gas at either Shell or BP. Tomorrow I am buying new spark plugs, the oil was changed at the dealership before I picked it up. I also read that the K&N filters seem to help. Any recomendations on spark plugs and fliters would be great.

i have a standard trans 02 with 67500 miles and i get around 29 to a gallon best i got was 36 in the late spring last year

change/clean filter, new plugs, clean EGR valve, run some fuel inj cleaner thorugh and that should help........all pretty easy to do!
-R

edit: 17 seems way too low!

Get one of these and you are free from horrible mpg. I think you can probably get like thousands of miles with just some water and food! :)

wow, too bad its still fwd.

Just a thought but maybe your rear brakes are adjusted to tight? With that amount of mileage on the car chances are the brake pads have been changed and if you over-tighten the piston that would create a lot of drag on the wheel. I dunno, just a thought? With my 02 P5 I get around 32 mpg with exhuast and an intake. Before the mods I got around 29

i have a sedan and i drive pretty hard with an auto. i usually get between 24-28mpg

02 auto p5 (bone stock) avg 30mpg and avg 360 a tank. id check your filter and spark plugs. k&n filter for the p5 (last time i checked) was like $29 or $30. spark plug info is in the owners manual (oem and NGK)

but yea 17 is WAY too low for a p5...and a 4 banger none the less (my dads got a 66 chevy c10 3 on the column that gets better gas mileage than that lol) but yea just check everythin out, maybe seafoam would help too?

You live in a state that uses ethonal in their fuel. I'm from MN so it's the same for me. Crappy gas mileage... After MN raised the limit to 20% in fuel it's gotten even worse. Our cars lose about 3 mpg from 10% worth of ethonal.

The worst for me has been about 24 mpg with a manual tranny in winter with crappy fuel. My best about 33 mpg, all highway driving. 17 mpg is way too low though. Like the above people said, do some tuning (oil change, air filter, plugs, tranny fluid, tire pressure, etc). Those little things will add together.

Just bought my 2002 auto w/71k miles. Seems to average around 25 mpg in mixed driving. I was hoping for better, but 17 sounds reeeeeeealy low. (boom07)

I have auto also and my mileage is SH**

I have auto also and my mileage is SH**, I have been tracking it for a very long time.

Like everybody suggested make sure that:
1) Tires are OK.
2) Remove roof rack
3) Remove dead weight
4) Change to SYN oil.
5) Stick with stock intake, I found that when I used SHORT RAM, my gas mileage went down.
6) Try different brands of gas until you find what works best for you.
7) Spark plugs, I tried almost all of them BOSH, SPLITIFIRE etc. and only the stock NGK worked the best for me. I have been trying the extended tip with some improvement. This plug reaches a little further into combustion chamber. The part #'s are:
EXTENDED TIP
NGK STANDARD ZFR5FS-11
NGK V-POWER ZFR5F-11
NGK G-POWER PLATIUM ZFR5FGP
NGK LASER PLATIUM PZFR5F-11
NGK IRDIUM IX ZFR5EIX-11

Here is my gas mileage:

17 definatley does not seem right. I average 25mpg and drive pretty hard. I'm sure I could get up to about 30 if I drove decent. If you need any help doing anything yourself, let me know, I can give you a hand sometime.

Thanks! that's cool man, if I need some help I'll let you know. I'm buying the plugs and stuff tomorrow, then I'll update.

17 is nuts! i just took mine the other day and i'm getting 25 on a boosted auto, which i thought was preety good all things considered! my explorer get's better! something is messed up..
