2002 Mazda Protege Alarm Issue

Opened the door with the key last night & the alarm went off. this morning I thought the battery was dead. I replaced (brand new) and car still wont start without a jump. I was able to go in reverse but as soon as I put it in drive the car cut off. Is this some sort of safety mechanism? Is there a way to override it. I also replaced the battery in the key thing - Any thoughts?? How do I reset or disable the alarm. Thanks

is it the factory mazda alarm system? if it is, the control boxes are know to go bad. just rip it out, and be done with it.
