Trailblazer SS AWD ....Still a Mazda Junkie Though.
I have a simple question...Is the valve lash Adjustable on the FS motor....My valvetrain has ticked since mile one and every other MSP I hear does not have this problem?.......WTF!
I just want to know if there is a way to quiet down the motor and mainly the valvetrain. This thing sounds as if it has 100K on it...and thats been since day 1 with the NEW motor!
The first engine in the car was as smooth as can be...and silent.I dont get it?
Dealer is checking it out BTW.

yeah, i've heard like 8 diff speeds and they all do this. My MP5 also did this before and this was from day 1. Its just the traite of a 4 cyl, especially the protege engine.

The valve lash can only be adjusted by adding shims under the lifters.....this is a very time consuming ordeal. I doubt that yours are actually out of adjustment, they all make some ticking noise, trust me.

yep, nonadjustable. This problem plagued the earlier fsde engines(mx6/probe) as well. I would have it fixed by the dealership underwarranty. In my old motor I had to replace the lift assembly to get rid of the annoying tick...

Well i will say that it may be common but should not be the norm and i won't stand for it.I heard two different MSP's this weekend alone that were silent like they should be.My first motor in the Speed was silent as hell as well. When they replaced the motor last year,I didnt have the car back 24 hr's and i was calling the dealer complaining about the noise. This is its first visit back since the swap. They will figure it out or it will stay there till they do.I think its BS for a new car to tick...PERIOD!THey can fix this motor or start swapping them in and out till they find one that doesnt....This just isnt right in my eyes.

Some would Be OK...Mine is pretty excessive in my eyes. This motor sounds like its going on 100K at only 19K on the motor. It also did it from mile one of this motor but not on the original one AT ALL!

I purchased my yellow mazdaspeed in October of 03. After about 3000 miles I began to have a engine tick sound from the exhaust manifold. Its not noticeable when the engine is cold because of the higher rmp, once the engine is warmed, it becomes VERY noticeable.

I took it to the dealership I purchased it from, they said they could not reproduce it. I then took it to another dealership and had them lisign before I left the car. They said it sounded wrong and they would take car of it. The next day they call me and tell me there is nothing they can do and that it is a normal sound.

This last week a brought my car into the first dealership again, I told them to please fix it or keep it. I work for the parent company that owns this dealership so I made it my business to be a royal pain in the ass. I had EVERY single tech look at the car, and had the service manager get his hands dirty as well. Every single person who looked at my car said it was way louder than it should have been, but NOBODY could figure out the problem. The general census seems to be its in the valve train, but they cannot find out for sure what it is.

Iam sick and tired of this sound, its making me VERY unpleased with my car. I would like to know if Iam overacting, please lising to this video and tell me if you have the same thing. If you do please post so I can get a list 2gether and hopefully get something done. If this doesnt get fixed, the car is selling. I love my car but this tick is so deep under my skin I cant take it anymore.

That was from a thread i made in march. Since then i measured the clearence between each and every shim and the cams, a few were off by as much as 4thousands. I ordered new shims, it helped, but it was still very loud. With 13k miles, i traded that car in for a new msp, same color. Crazy move? cost me 2k, but i am VERY happy that my new one isnt as loud, but it is still loud.

Good luck

Have you guys tried heavier oil? Try 10w30. I use it, I have about 26k on mine right now and have NO problems with lifter tap. This is actually "normal" for engines when a lighter weight oil is used.

well the problem with running heavier oil is that it "clogs up" the turbo. Force, when they replaced your engine did they drop in a new crate motor or did they pull the head and just re-machine everything? Well at any rate def. go raise hell, this is a warranty issue and they must fix it! Shimming is a pain in the ass and shouldnt have to be done on a new car by the owner.

Mine sounds like "Tick tick tick" ...are you using the Mazda 626 V6 oil filter? I'm using it seemed to help a little or it could just be me.

how would the filter have a affect on this? im not bein a jerk, i just dont see how it would, elaborate please.

I tried thicker oil, no different. I even had rob from pineapple racing help me out, it was a wierd problem.

Well the dealer said that the valvetrain is not adjutable like previously mentioned in this post....BUT....I also thought I had an exhaust leak that i have been trying to find for months...They found it and it may be part of my excessive ticking noise. The EGR tube was leaking....And if you have ever hear a tiny leak in an exhaust at the mani...It can make a lot of ticking noise.I have yet to hear the car as it still isnt done getting everything looked at ,but i hope this helps out with the noise.I will know when I pick it up tomorrow evening or friday evening. They also ordered me a new radio since mine is possessed and a new Shift knob. They said that they should be getting the original shift knob that everyone says was dis continued.I will know tomorrow for sure when the parts show up.I will let you guys know how the tick sounds when i do.

Well I read some where on here that with the 626 oil filter it raises the oil capacity from 3.7 to an even 4.0 quarts. Somebody on here said that it should raise the oil pressure in the engine because there is more oil in it. Which would help reduce the ticking. (Don't take my word for it, i know little about cars) Not saying this is true, but thats just what I read

(scratch) ya ive tried thicker oil to and it was of no help

Just to let you know, oil Quantity does NOT effect oil pressure. The oil pump and tolerances in the motor will dictate the oil pressure of any engine. The only way to up the oil pressure would be to have tighter clearances through out the motor or to add a high flow oil pump.

Just a little FYI.

Well thats nice to know about the oil pressure  Like I said, I read it on here some where and I didnt know if it were true or not. Quick question, do you think the extra oil capacity created by the 626-oil filter is doing anything to help our motors (I know now that it doesnt help with the ticking problem), or is it hurting it?

Thanks
Good luck with the ticking problem in your car :)

No the bigger filter is great. It will hold more capacity which in turn lets the oil circulate a little less and wont break down as bad or as quick. Is it anything major..NO...nothing you would notice.but it doesnt hurt either.
