i am attending my first auto x this sunday. i have never even been to a auto x race before. i am going with my friend who has a new M3. i am going to race but dont want to embarass my self. so does anyone have a few pointer for a first timer.

Where you going? Chances are one of us will be there.

Best first timer advice... look ahead look ahead look ahead. The only thing that seperates the bottom of the rung drivers to the top is the ability for drivers to stay thinking ahead on every turn to know what to do to the next. I'd say thats the single biggest barrier that everyone (including me) has. Some people call it staying ahead, looking ahead... whatever. Its your ability to see each corner before you come to it and know what to do on the way out into the next corner... instead of OH s*** TURN... s*** TURN... s*** CONE TURN BRAKE AHHHHHH!!!!

And don't worry if people are much much much much much much much faster than you. Have fun and ignore the penis waving.

Have fun, get an instructor to ride with you, they should point themselved out at the drivers meeting. Walk the course a few times, always look ahead (very difficult for a beginner, but it's better to start the habit early) if the car begins to spin, put 2 feet in (stand on the brake and clutch) if you try to recover a spin you will only make it worse. Most important, have fun.

BTW, the wheels I bought off of you are what my race tires roll on ;)

at times i get frustrated cause the a-pillar will be blocking a cone from my view... i look out the driver's side window alot, and the windshield :)

don't forget to have fun, don't worry about your times for now. learn how to drive your car to the max, w/o pushing it over and you'll be running better times than if you're screeching your tires around every turn.

oh yea, and be prepared to become addicted!

thanks alot for all of your tips everyone. im not going to push the wagon hard, mainly because i just got my wings west bumper put on like a month ago so i dont want to take the chances of somehow jacking that up, and also, well i guess thats it...
again thanks to all of you again.

no1stunna,
If you do a search on the site, you will find a lot of threads on autocrossing and how to get started. Amoung them is this one:

Find someone near you that is more experienced and get him to help you. Most places have peoplr that either the club has designated to help novices or people that have set that task for themselves. If you were closer like Phoenix or Tucson, I would help you MO is a bit of a streath for me.

We have our monthly event Sunday. The temperature will be HOT but it shoudl be a fun event.

Most of our advice is to focus on having fun and learn the driving techniques. Adjust yourself to the car until you are consistant and then you can work on the car.

Let us know how you did and what you thought but above all have fun.

well i went and had a blast. that was one of the funnest things i have ever done. i was really nervous at first, but after the first run i acted like i was playing gran turismo and went for it. needless to say my buddy who has been doing autox for a while now, WITH A NEW M3, finished with a time of 48. something. well on my second lap i ran a 50. something. he was very impressed and i think i found a new hobby. I also think the mazda suprised the heck out of a lot of people. here are some pics. they arent the best because one of my friends took them and it appears he didnt really want to be taking them.
