1997 Coil Pack Replacement

My check engine light went on during a long drive back to CA from Utah. I stopped immediately and checked everything from the gas cap to under the hood but found nothing loose, broken, leaking or blown. I continued on my way buy weary of desolate area I was driving through but made home to So.Cal. all in one piece. Went to my local Mazda dealorship and had the service department hook it up to their dianostic device. According that report, I have a one "corroded" coil pack terminal and that the whole pack should be replaced. The engine is not missing and now the "idiot" light has been reset to the OFF position. The service advisor states that the light may appear again and that to replace the pack would be approx. $350 parts included. Anyone had this situation and if so, what or how did you resolve it? I really don't have the tokens to go forward at this time, so I am looking for a more cost-effective method to fix the problem. What about used parts? Would I just be buying another problem? Thanks in advance for your anticipated response(s).

Once again thanks WillD for the link. Since I had the techs check things out, the motor check engine light is still out and the car is running great. They mentioned that one of the terminals had some "corrosion" in it and they cleaned it out, so I guess that was all it needed. The motor skips a beat!

That's good news! Glad you got it figured out.
