I currently drive a 1993 3.0L V6 Camry and was looking to buy a new car.
The car I'm looking to buy is a 2012 2.5L I4 Mazda3, but I first want to make sure I'm not going to be downgrading in speed.
Am I? Why or why not?
Your Camry came out of the factory with 185hp almost 20 years ago with a curb weight of 1334kg (must be more with the V6). The 3 with the 2.5l develops 167hp and will weigh about the same. Yes a little bit less horsepower but these engines and transmissions are alot more responsive and Mazdas gearing is more aggressive. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
But the best way to find out is to test drive one yourself.

So you're going from an old potato to a new cucumber? If you're worried about speed, don't buy a regular 3, get a mazdaspeed. Otherwise, get a new skyactive 3 and be glad for excellent mpg.
