19" Wheels and Tyres

Its not restricting profits at all at the moment, or for the next few years for tire manufactures since this is the only car that takes this size and no one other than a few who have had flats are in need of them yet. Even if there were people in need of them, they would have to cut production on other tires to ramp up production in this size. Ask owners of GMC acadia/ Chevy traverse/ and Buick enclave... their tires have been out of production on and off for the last year or so, and like GT owners, they are a unique size to those 3 vehicles... We have one vehicle, and only one model within that line that takes this size. So, the possibility of a lot of tire manufactures jumping at the chance to make a profit by producing this size is not likely... unless a LOT of other cars start coming out with this size on their vehicles soon. Until then, there's 2 options a Kumo and Toyo... neither are that great IMO and because of low production volume, they're overpriced.

We will never have visibility or know exact impact on profitablity. The companies involved do not disclose profitability at this granular level (by tire line) and they are not required to do so, that's strictly insider information. Agreed higher prices help minimize the impact, but the tire business needs volume in the long run for high profits, even if it comes from OEM sales. I don't believe the shortage as it exists today will last that long, supply will improve somewhat (supply/demand balance will change).

Will they fit? Not being an expert, is it safe to do that?

Yes they would fit and yes it's perfectly safe. Your speedometer would be off by less than 1MPH (and it's probably already off anyway). When I have altered overall diameter in cars, I've often made the speedometer MORE accurate than it was stock ;)

Tire sales drives profitability, profitability is an incentive for tire manufactures to get some skin in the game, and more cars on the road with this size drives tires sales. And the more they make, the lower they cost.

Bottom line- we need more cars on the road with this size to get a better selection...Mazda alone isn't big enough to do it.

Bottom line - no major tire company depends on one carmaker, one tire model or one size to achieve acceptable bottom line profitability.

No one said they did.

And nobody said Mazda alone was big enough to do it.

Lol with our OT diversion into 6th grade economics lesson / trivia on the bottom line.

Oh yea, about those 19 inch wheels and tires. Toyos and Kumhos today (strangely enough my other 2 sedans have those 2 brands on them)...

tirerack.com has them back in stock for $268 plus shipping. Not tooooo bad considering its an oddball size.

Tirerack has the Toyo A23 in this size which is the tyre fitted for the US market. Europe and the UK has the same size but we have the TOYO Proxes R36 fitted as standard. I'm not sure what the difference is if any.

Hi Applauso, mind sharing where you sourced it? I am near you so would be useful to know. Thx.

Pauly69. I cocked up, Sorry. Did you see the post With the answer in? I messed it up. Anyway it's RRG Mazda Stockport. They have 1 in stock.

these pictures are from Mazda Hockenheim Experience tour , so you're pretty safe with 235/55/R19 :) (mounted on original wheels)

Cheers,
Miki

instead of 100km/h tacho should read abut 97km/h... not a big deal. I think it's a fair trade off for high quality and easy to obtain tires, though I would still prefer if Mazda kept CX-7 wheel size (19x8J) on CX-5 (19x7J). 19" wheels with 7 inches width are almost non-existent.

Also check this:
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2012/08/mazda-mx-5-impacted-by-tire-shortage/

No premium tire manufacturer makes 225/55/R19 size, while you have ALL of them making 235/55/R19, so why such stupid decision? Problem is 235 on 7" width is already at the upper limit. If Mazda wanted Toyo, why not supplying CX-5 with Toyo T1 http://www.toyotires.eu/tire/pattern/proxes-t1-sport-suv it's amazing tire!

I know new Kodo philosophy suppose to shave off weight wherever possible, but this is kinda stupid, especially for end users. Don't forget mirror vibration issue. Mazda Wien (Vienna) told me new mirrors should come end of AUG, more likely SEP.

Cheers,
Miki

Non-issue, see Tire Rack website for ample 225/55/19 tire choices.

Plenty of choices today (Kumho, Goodyear, Toyo).

Yes, non-issue, if I can afford a $30K US CX-5 GT, I can easily afford the choice of 3 different brands of properly sized tires when replacement is required 4 years down the road.

( And I don't want skinny, under-sized 215 tires on my 19"x7" CX-5 alloy rims, I trust Mazda's engineering team on choice of 225 tire.) Unsprung weight with 19" OEM configuration is also a non-issue, it's already thoroughly engineered (Skyactiv technology) by Mazda. CX-5 on 19's handles and rides as well as any premium compact SUV/crossover.
