11psi - Clutch can't handle the torque

Well, the clutch is almost broken in right now. I have just over 400 miles on it. It's a little rough off the line under most circumstances, but normal shifts are fine if you really focus on being smooth.

The clutch pedal is WAY lighter than my ACT clutch.

It should hold. A 4 puck clutch with the stock pressure plate should hold for 12-15 psi easy.
Check ACT 4 puck specs WITH the Pressure plate. They are unsprung and very rough when launching out of a dead stop. It will badly shake the engine, break mounts even on idle.

So does everybody agree that a Spec Stage 3 is better than a ACT Stage 3 clutch? Also wouldn't a 6 puck clutch going to be too harsh on the trans if you drag race?

I may be in the market for a clutch here sometime... starting to get slippage every here and there... we'll see if it does it on the track.. if it does... then time for a new clutch... :(. Probably go with the Stage 3 unless you are recommending toward the stage 2... I can always HOPE that I may make it to 300 ft-lb's of toruqe some day in a happy little land :dunno:

terry went with that lighter clutch in hopes that the clutch would burn out prior to the tranny killing itself.

I guess I can see that from the engagement ends of things... but nobody has wrecked a tranny due to power output yet. Just shifting difficulties. I'll need to get solid mounts in as well probably to help combat the issue. I ordered an extra set of forks as a "just in case" sort of thing since together they cost about 90 bucks... Hopefully I won't ever need them, but they are also the latest and greatest so I can post pics of any difference that does or does not exist. I'll be tearing the tranny apart in a few weeks to put in an LSD. May do the clutch while I'm in there as well. Save some serious effort.

I'm at 7 psi now.. going to go to 10 soon... then this winter I'll go forged and hope to tune up into the 20 psi range assuming everything handles it.

Hows the clutch? It did take a little gettnig used to driving the miata with the 4 puck.. but its not too bad.. and hits nice and hard. :)
Plus the pressure plate is hardcore, but not hard enough to kill trannies... at least i hope so.

Unsprung Disk = break trannys if good care is not taken

Heavy Pressure plate = failures on the pump or the lines or even worse, damages crankshafts over the time.

man thats weird with the act... i had both a 2100 and a 2600presure plate with a street disk, 6 puk and 4 puk combo and never had a problem with slipping on my GSX pushing 19psi...let me tell you 4puk and less is not streetable...it will engage like a jet engine if you dont slip the living s*** out of it....also really really really bad for the transmission and flywheel...puts entirely too much stress on a stock tranny....I had a clutchmaster on my mx-6 turbo and it was actually a damn good clutch for the money never had any problems with it...then again i wasnt pushing much over 200whp with it...for anything under 300whp i would say a 6puk with a 2600lb pressure plate would be fine....the only time Ireally felt a 4puk was needed was on my lt4 corvette....

Ok, so I have about 650 miles on the new clutch, and recc break in was 450. I'm starting to floor it and such, but it STILL slips sometimes.

Today, as I was leaving work I punched it in 3rd gear...and it slipped for 300rpm befor it enganged. Tried it again...slipped for 2000 rpm before it engaged.

Tried it a few times after that, and it started holding.

This isn't the first time the above has happened...it seems like it needs to be beat on sometimes in order to hold properly. Odd.

Also, since the cluthch went in, if I'm stopped, and the clutch is engaged while I'm in nuetral, it makes a "wobbily hum" kind of sound. If i press the clutch pedal to the floor, it goes away. Don't ask me why.

that slipping doesnt sound good :(

I also get a vibration/tapping noise sometimes while idleing at a light, and when i press the pedal in it goes away

I spoke with somebody from fidanza that assured me that the friction plates were not a weak link, and wouldnt slip.
