00 Protege DX
Hey guys, this is kinda my first post so I'm new...I took over payments on my grandmother's 2001 1.6 DOHC Protege A/T. I've custom rigged up an intake because i have no Idead how to get passed that air flow senser, and cleaned out the catalytic converter (no emissons inspections here), But I'm not satisfied with as slow as it goes. I can get beat by a stock M/T civc dx... that's a SOHC 110hp car w/o vtec. a few of my friends are big honda freaks and they say swap then engine, because they do that with their civics.. So basically I was wondering if I could put any other engine besides the 1.6,1.8, or 2.0 in my car... maybe the K8ZE 2.5 V6 from the MX-6. and If not, do you know where i could find a 2.0 DOHC engine for not to expensive and comes with a 5 speed tranny.

you're better off swapping the AT for an MT & getting a turbo kit for the 1.6. From what I've read the 1.6 is very boost friendly

I've heard very good things as far as 1.6 engines boosted. From what's said around this site they respond much better to boost then the 2.0. Try searching and you should get some great info about boosting the 1.6. If you're having trouble finding exactly what you need just make a new thread about boosting your 1.6. Welcome to the protege community.

We have too many boosted 1.6es what you need to do is the v6 swap we need more of them. Would be cooler if anything.

Although boosting the 1.6l would kill pretty much anything on the road, just be sure to get a manual the autos only good to 160whp.

what they said, boost the 1.6l, but if you want to be daring, it has been proven that the kl series motor /tranny will bolt into our cars with the fs-de 2.0l motor mounts found in the newer protege, the wiring would all have to be custom , as for a few other parts too .

i have a 2000 lx auto, same as yours.. i just had to change the tranny and i have a stock motor, so that shows u right there that its not the strongest thing in the world, and btw, the reason u got beat by a 110 hp sohc is cause our 1.6l dohc only puts 83 whp, that civic is prolly putting about 94 to 96whp.. cause of the manual..

It's finally good to talk to some fellow protege drivers... I would boost and tranny swap, but turbo can cost some killer $$$, I have a mechanic who can put the v6 in for a fee of $100 and keep the engine (the 1.6), He said he'd love to do it, because he knows about how nice that engine is... I found the engine with 5 speed trans for $1,399... compare to $4000 for a turbo.. lol, just need axls, clutch, clutch pedal, and shifter and I'm good... maybe put some boost on it when I have the engine.

if you can do it, you would be the first third gen protege owner as i know it to fit the KL engine into the car. you will need custom axles, custom shift linkage made, custom motor mounts, etc etc etc and I guarantee you that the cost is going to reach or exceed what it takes to go turbo. i strongly suggest you reconsider.

u need to find the front half of a car with that engine, u have to use everything from that car to run the engine, plus u are gonna need FS-DE motor mounts..

fs-de motor mounts will bolt it right in, axles from the FS-DE Protege work, you do need custom shift linkage, they are differant in length..

Hi everybody.

I'm the owner of the "soon-to-be-V6" Protege. The swap is not finished yet, maybe by the end of the month it will be running. There is some things I have to make clear before I go into details. This car will be a race car only(noticed the roll cage in the photo?), so a lot of "streetability details" have been left out. There is no A/C, power steering, heater, ventilation, radio, etc. I just need working lights, brakes and ignition.I brought a WHOLE 1993 Probe GT with a KL-ZE in it for the swap, I plan to put my 165K kms FS engine in it(winter beater)!

Mechanical/physical issues: not much! Everything fits like it was meant to be there, just take the motor mounts off the FS and put them on the KL! Also, the Long Neck intake manifold of the KL31 version of the KL-ZE doesn't fit if you keep the stock master cylinder. I was planning to put remote master cylinder, but I'm too poor! So a curved neck ZE manifold(best) or KL-03 manifold is mandatory. The transmission I used was internally broken so I don't know if they have the same spline counts, in the worst case I just swap the driveshaft ends, the transmission is almost identical externally. You need to use the radiator from the V6, so new brackets must be made.

Electrical/Electronics issues: well, I can not say that it will be easy, but it will be a lot of work. From our initial observation, Mazda didn't seem to have change a lot of things(connector-wise) over the years so it will be simpler. It will be an adventure to see what fit and what not! I have two whle cars, so I'm sure I'll find a way.

I'm sure that my experience with this swap will help somebody to someday make a streetable V6 Protege, till then I'll race it! (cheers2)

P.S.: Did you notice the nice Mazda 6 brakes on the car? (wow)

Good news, the stock Protege driveshafts fit! One thing less to worry!
For the one who's gonna try to make a street car with everything functionnal with this drivetrain, he better be a wiring genius!

Somehow I'm guessing a teenager that took over pmts on his grandmother 1.6L protege cant afford a Mazdaspeed 6

Keep the 1.6 and boost it. The 1.6 is one of the strongest Pro motor out there for boosting. The 1.6 Miata guys are stroking their 1.6s to 1.8s that with 12 bounds of boost along with a Quaife LSD you'll be buying several sets of tire a year. (thumb)

You know what, i honestly and truthfully dont think putting a kl in a 3rd gen would be that much trouble.
The v6mx3 - Protege - probe all share the same motor mount positions, just the ones on the probe are shaped different.

The probe/mx6 - mx3 v6 trannies are interchangeable

The linkage form the probe/mx6 is too short for the 1st gens, but i am 80% sure that the linkage from the probe/mx6 are will fit in a 3rd gen.

626 - probe - mx6 lv6 linkage are all the same, as well as the 4 cyl models just obviously shorter but they are still the same length thru out all the models. The 3 cars are all exactly identical engine/tranny wise.

The Ecu - engine harness are wired up identical in the probe/mx6/3rd gen. i mean the 4cyl probe/mx6 and the protege 2.0's are almost identical all the way down to the ecu/harness.

The axles on the probe/mx6/626 wont go into 1st gen spindles, BUT im pretty sure that they will fit in 3rd gens fine.

its definately doable, if u find a 95-97 Mx6/probe V6, or a 95 - 00 626 v6 manual (hard to find), the swap would be sooo easily done. And if its any issue, the mx3 v6 will probrably make up with it. When i did my swap i realized how interchangeable these mazdas are its great. its jsut a mtter of finding the correct pieces for the puzzle.

Ive got soo many parts form soo many vehicles in my pro. Probe v6 - 95 626 ECU(maybe why i throw soo many cel using a stupid OBDII ecu on a OBDI motor...duuurrrr) - mx3 gs linkage - probe clutch - Mx3 Gs Flywheel - mx3 gs harness - mx3 gs passenger sid emotor mount - mx3 gs crossmember - mx3 gs axles. The mix of parts was by choice and availlability, but it really isnt a high mountain to climb. I wish i had more money to throw into a 3rd gen v6 swap.

BTW, im lokin into a 2000 Protege LX myself as a daily..hopefully i can get it this weekend..:)

agree with what tampa said. i've seen a the v6 in 1st gen protege, but the 3rd gen is totally different.

im not compariing them, im saying. that its not that far stretched. the motor mount locations of the 2 1st - 3rd gens are

And please let me know errors and or BS, u find im more than willing to learn more abou 3rd gens. I havent worked on many 3rd gens. Just observed them.

Its been said that the 3rd gen halfshafts work in the Probe GT tranny already.
THe linkages between the prbe/mx6 v6 and 4cyl are the same length... so thats no problem

The engine mounts for the FS - KlDE - KLZE - B6 - BP - K8 - KFZE are all in the same location event he trannys that go with them. The only idfference is that the 4cyl and 6 cyl motor mounts have different brackets on the mounts, and the motor mounts are held on by 2-4 bolts. YOu can out either one of those motors in any protege - mx6 - mx3 - probe.

PLEAAASE corrct me, im eager to learn!!
