03.5 Yellow Paint Warning!!

My blazing yellow MSP was recently hit by someone where I freakin' work!! I put in the shop more than a week ago, and I get a call saying they're having trouble getting the paint to match!! They say because of the "pearl" effect in the paint, it's difficult to match it with paint found locally. He said they've already tried three different color combinations with no success. NOW the've figured out to order the paint directly from the factory, which is what I'm waiting on now.

These people have a good reputation, but this is a rare paint that is very difficult to reproduce. So if you ever need any paint work done, make sure you tell the body people my little story. This will save you lots of headaches, and extra days of driving a rental. (They gave me a 2003 Protege DX. No turbo, it's an automatic, and power NOTHING!)

Anyway, I thought I would just pass this along.(yellomp3)

I know how much of a pain in the ass it is to have shop problems (my story is one of the worst) but I will say this for your situation. They could have given you a Chevy Cavalier as a rental. Count your blessings for the DX!

When I had to have my fender repainted, the first question I asked was how they were going to match the paint, since Titanium Gray was a brand new color, and had that pearlescent sparkle in it. The guy at the repair shop said it was no problem, because the paint code sticker on the car tells them exactly how much of which kinds of paint to mix. It matches perfectly, and I can't even tell it's been painted.

Which is the only damn thing they did right. Caliber Collision in San Antonio.

Sorry to here that. I know it suck to have a rental car. I had 4cyl. Galant that reeked of men's cologne. (confused) It was making me dizzy. I drove to work and when I got out of the car the smell was following me. When I got in the elevator everyone was staring at me. :o o crap! Even my boss could smell me from a mile away.

I remember seeing something online about the colors that go into making the yellow paint, it's like a yellow base coat and then a pink opalescent metalflake coat. That's why it looks orange under certain lighting.

my 03.5 yellow msp hit a gaurd rail and they tried to match the paint at the dealer. Well it does not match, but they say it matchs perfect on there machine. Im not letting them repaint the whole car casue I dont want it totaly messed up. I guess i just have to deal with the rear being slightly orange

My front bumper on my old Spicy was painted and it matched perfectly. Paul at TJ's Auto Service (440-439-4659 Cleveland, OH) said the Spicy Orange isn't even a challenge. I'll ask him about the yellow.

I had no problem matching my MP3's paint when it was brand new. If you go to a good shop, they'll be able to match it.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone to suffer with mismatched paint. Matching the color is a science. If a shop can't do it then they are clueless.

go to a body shop that does work mainly on lexus, bmw and mercedes. they do work on tons of luxury cars with pearl paint, so it'll be easy to match, although it's tons more expensive. my front bumper, for example, would be $580 for regular paint. if i had pearl paint, it would be another $150 because it's such a harder paint to match and because it takes another few coats. but yeah. good luck.

Ouch, sorry to hear about getting hit, that sucks. When I had my spoiler painted, (Laser Blue Mica) they had no trouble with the paint, looks perfect. Unless the yellow has more pearl in it than the blue? I'd find another shop if I were you.

yeah I had My whole rear bumper repainted, and a small section of the body near the tail light and it matches perfect. I didn't think it would, but I was impressed.

when i got a new rear bumper, the paint matched perfectly fine...the shop didnt have one problem getting the paint matched.

Same story here. I had my front end repainted, and the place matched it on the first attempt. Can't even tell it was repainted:)

the guy who did my paint work does mostly workon custom choppers and hotrods and stuff and is really good. but he said when he mixed up the paint code ont eh door it was waaay off. then he called up wherever to ask if there were any variations on the color and they said yea one lighter and one darker, and neither of those were close either. so he just took to mixing it up by eye and trial and error until like 15 mixes later, he matched it perfect.

i dont know about these shops that say it was easy and whatnot but if you could find out any of their paint mixing codes or schemes they used id love to see them to bring to my paint guy

Thanks for the replies. I should hopefully get to see the end result later today. They had to fedex the paint from mazda so they weren't able to paint until last Friday. Like I said, this place has a good reputation, but it's BFE Mississippi. I'm so far from Texas I could s***, but you go where the money takes you, ya know? I'll post after I check it out, but I told him I wouldn't take it back until it's done right!

paints can be matched easily but after 6 months of sitting in the sun and car washes etc itll be a little off . not much ya can do besides repaint / clearclot
