damn. i'm sorry to hear that. i hate it when my projects get held up because of backordered stuff. i got mine a couple months ago from mazdaformance and it was just sitting around my house waiting. the only think i had to wait that long on was my flywheel.

i got a speedo gear and oil seals with my LSD. we'll see how things go today/tomorrow because my tranny's coming out today.

Interesting. I'm glad this thread popped up before I tore apart my tranny.

i think little beavis did his quaife lsd himself....was it hard at all??? a "how-to" would be unreal if you could make one!!! thanks

Yes Little Beavis and I did his quaife install... we'll be doing my MSP install once I get the damn LSD. As far as the how-to... It'll be a hell of a write-up and I know Beavis is more than a tidge busy and time is hard to come by. I may do one once we do the install on my car and I have all the pictures etc... and having done it know where the critical pictures are now... but I can't gurantee that it'll be Beavis quality, but it'll be pretty good... but the short version goes... remove a lot of fricken pieces.. take out a good 14 bolts to drop the tranny... it weighs 95 lbs so watch out. Take off a bunch more bolts including that black pan on the end of the tranny... remove a few more nuts... pull tranny apart. Hope you remember how to put all the gears back on... "machine" off part of the gate system for the quaife.... put it back together... say a few prayers.. bolt it in... drive your car ;)... Don't worry if I did a real writeup it'd be much better... but seriously... it's a hell of a job as far as amount of work.. but nothing is actually complicated or "difficult" to do. Just a lot of time and effort.. In all honesty I felt that dropping the tranny and putting it back in was the worst part... so it's no "harder" than a clutch install in the end...

co0L....im thinking of wasting a lot more money on my car...so this will definetly be one of the improvements i plan to do...thanks for all the help, cant wait for that write up! hehehe

well here are some pics of my LSD now that I have it.. and you can see the odd shoulder that there is for where the speedo gear goes. there is no pressing required to put on the speedo gear btw... it just sits on there and is held in place once the cone roller bearing is in place... so here you go..

The only thing that bothers me is that it seems like the speedo gear does not sit concentric on the lsd if you notice in the top shot pic... any thoughts???

So how much did you find it for? I think this mod just moved up on my to do list. DAMN that wheel spin!

shipped to my door with all bearings, 2 shift forks (just in case ;) ), seals, speedo gear, and so forth was 630. But talk to Shawn at Mazdaformance.com to see what your pricing would be. Shawn is an awesome guy and super helpful.

I'll be hopefully getting mine welded this week or early next week.. doing the install on the 28th-30th... will do a writeup on how to do it as soon as I finish and have all the pictures... but feel free anyone who is doing it to PM me or what not with questions.. I check the forums repeatedly through the day so you should get an answer in under 12 hours between 7 and 10 during the day!

Later.

Steve

Looks like some machining was done to the LSD before shipping. Not sure if the LSD's in the MSP already come with those notches for the speedo gear or not. (dunno)

Well the LSD came straight from mazdaformance as soon as they got it in from Mazda... so it is pretty much as you would receive yours. I don't think the runout on the gear positioning is a big deal. I'll have to see how it does when I get closer to the install.. but for no I'm not worried about it...

When you go to weld the contact point of the LSD to the gear, I wonder how much that would affect the balance of the rotation of the LSD? I plan on going the same route.

That is my biggest concern at this point... I'm hoping to have them do one even bead all the way around. If done well it should be very even and not effect balance. I'm going to do what I can to check the balance on it... and then can grind off areas as needed... but I am concerned about that to be sure.
