CX-5 Safety Suggestions

When you drive off without fastening your seatbelt, there is an audible chime and a blinking light on the instrument cluster telling you to fasten your seatbelt. A similar kind of warning would be really helpful for low beam headlights. Maybe just a warning that pops up, something along the lines of "Low light warning - Consider turning on your headlights". Since we already have ambient light sensors that trigger the automatic brightness settings for the infotainment/instrument cluster/ADD (HUD), it should be really easy to implement.

Low light triggers automatic brightness > system check for headlight on/off > if headlight off, trigger headlight warning

I wish all cars had this. I can't tell you how many times I come across people driving without their lights on in the early winter mornings.

I replaced my rear headrests with JDM OEM ones. Still there but much lower. Also allows rear seats to be flip down without headrests hitting front seats.
Yeah, me too. Same benefits plus can still be safety device for rear passengers.

We've discussed this before, but one of the uses for gaining control of all the modes on the light stalk is to not run headlights during certain times. Examples include pulling up to a house at night and not wanting to shine lights in the windows, and neighborhood Xmas light displays where cars slowly roll through checking out the over-the-top decorations. An alert chime like the seat belts would be incredibly annoying. There has to be another way.

They work and since they should last the life of the 5 - Im not tampering with em - Its definitely a good safety feature - anyone get high beamed at night because others think your HBs are on ? I get it a lot on my 25 --so i fire back and they usually just keep beaming me like they're upset
Maybe your lights need to be re-aimed. Part of new car checkout service at the dealer is supposed to be properly aiming headlights, though I doubt anyone takes time to do that service. Oncoming traffic shouldn't have to be blinded.

People confuse the mode unlock as a "DRL disable". That's not how I see it. It just gives you the options the car was designed with--including the option to run the LED accents and all other exterior lights, which is not normally an option. I bet there are thousands of Mazda drivers out there who can't figure out why the light stalk doesn't do anything despite the labels.

What isn't safe is what you describe: getting used to the DRLs and not realizing the tail lights are not on.
Can you elaborate on the "mode unlock as a DRL disable"? I'm not sure as to what you're referring.

And we have blind spot monitoring, which lights up amber in the corner of your eye.

Also, if people actually use their turn signals, the car beeps at you if there is an object there.
I turned the beep off as it beeps at traffic lights. Appears it's not combined with a speed sensor to go off only when in motion. Too annoying for me. My wife leaves her's on.

The procedure that unlocks the options on the light stalk. Without it, by default for Mazdas in the U.S., it does nothing when the car is moving except for the high beam toggle.

Some people call it a "DRL disable" but that's not how I see it, because it's not an accurate description. You can still turn the lights on manually.

N7turbo: I've got a 2023 Premium and have looked through the manual. I can't find anything about unlocking the options on the light stalk. Am I being dumb?
