2002, Mazda protege5 hatch
Hello everyone!
Got a bit of a problem, so let me bring you all up to date one whats going on haha

My friend has a 2002 Mazda Protege5, last year the engine started knocking really bad and white smoke comes out the back end now....wellp it was suggested to me that i need to look for a new engine. i go to research what engine came stock and according to the internets, it is the 2.0 FS motor, which is a 14 valve DOCH...cool. Well, the motor inside the car is a 16 valve DOHC, which according to the internets is the FE-DOHC or at least thats the only mazda motor i can find that is a 16 valve. Now my friend keeps saying that when they bought it the guy told him "its some special limited model" which i cant find anything about, im going to attach a few photos so you guys can visually see what i am talking about. the only thing i know is there is something on the back that says xtreme and the hood has some like scoop/air induction things haha, i dont know if this is just some cosmetic kit or not.

anyways, i dont know if the current motor can be fixed...so i am planning on buying a new one and having it installed, the only issue being...i dont know what motor i am going to need. i wanna keep it oem, im not going to mod the car or do anything other then make it reliable so i can make it through school and beyond

thanks for your time and help!

the FSDE 2.0 is a 16 valve not 14 valve, and unless your in another country, its the only motor that comes in a P5, you may have misread your info, as far as "special limited model" all i see is a sticker and an aftermarket hood

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Familia unfortunately this is all i have been able to find, granted only like 80% of wikipedia is reliable, that is what it says. and i figured the sticker and stuff was all cosmetic, but if youre sure then awesome, it eliminates all my worries haha

also, any good/reccomended websites to order engines from?

Fresco is right. The only special edition Protege5 that exists is called a Sport2.0 which you won't find the the US unless they were imported. They have a High compression 2.0L motor that makes 170hp instead of the FSDE's 130hp. The Sport2.0 has a different bumpers, skirts, and decals all over. The protege5 pictured above has an aftermarket hood and some random xtreme sticker. As far as the 14-valve. That's a typo. That would mean 3.5 valves per cylinder instead of the 4 valves per cylinder with the 16-valve engine.
Try the seafoam treatment on the engine to see if that helps with the issues.

Oh ok, haha then i was reading it wrong. Thanks!

i dunno if a seafoam treatment will work. i was told to take the valve cover off to make sure things werent loose. i mean its knocking pretty dang loud, it sounds like a rod is busted...but when i check the oil level its full?? i dunno, if i can fix it myself i would do it, but i dont know whats wrong with it 100%

is there a name anywhere on that hood? i really like the look of it and would like to try and find one. Are the scoops functional or have a pop out to make them functional or completely cosmetic?

sorry to jack your thread but JDM, is it possibly to modify our US motors to be the high compression 2.0L that you speak of? 40hp more sounds pretty nice with it being all internals. Any ideas?

You can swap the internals over. There are a few different parts tho. In the manual you will see instructions for FS-DE and FS-ZE motors

you have to do a whole engine swap. It's a pain in the ass, wiring is a nightmare, some parts have to be manufactured or modified to change everything. Definitely way too much work for 40hp. Turbo would be have a better output for the same amount of work. Since the FS-ZE is a high compression, it would be a bad idea to do an engine swap and turbo that motor unless you wanna join the Boom-Boom club.

As far as the hood goes, I'm not sure who the manufacturer is, I just know BrianMP5 has that hood on his P5. The scoops aren't just visual, they have grills and will allow airflow directly below their opening. I doubt you can find that hood easily. The majority of hoods for the P5 have gone extinct except for the carbon fiber and evo style

I would recomend that if it needs a new motor, to simply replace it with excactly the same motor that it has, They are very common and that would reduce any wiring problems.

+1

any mazda FS-DE 2.0 will work

any mazda FS-DE 2.0 will work

and will be much easier to find an FS-DE 2.0.

Make sure you get a 2.0 and not the Canadian 1.6L I believe. I had to sort through all the 1.6L transmissions and find the right 2.0L transmission when I replaced mine
