Before buying my 5, I wanted to see what would transfer over from my old car. I used to have a Miata. It turns out the shift knob fits perfect. Since the knob was originally polished stainless steel and nothing in this car is, I decided to dull things down. A few hours with various grits of sandpaper, and voila! A satin finished Voodoo knob.
Since the base of the shift boot is so large and the neck of the knob so small, it didn't look right. I took some measurements of the shift boot with the intension to create a trim ring that fit over part of the boot, and had the same finish as the knob. Technically I found a satin finish double hooked robe hanger, but I didn't want to spend the cash and then have a machine shop cut it up. What I found instead was a washer type spacer. I wish I could find the package and give its proper name, but I found it in the hardware section with power drills and I believe it is a Dewalt?
Here are pics.
1. without flash.
2. with flash, you can see the knob is still a bit lighter than the shift boot trim ring. I'm looking for a way to stain it to match the gray of the plastic. Any ideas?
3. the knob and ring so you can see the finish. I used 60, 80, 150, 400 grit. 400 grit was done in pattern to follow the contour of the knob.
4. Profile of the spacer. It is beveled and kind of thick. It is originally black metal, so I had to sand that as well.
Of course if you don't want to go through all this trouble, you can always go to the site and get one. Unfortunately they do not make trim rings.
