Well I finally got one...

Well I got a good deal on a P5 so I bought it the other day. It came with Factory Leather, Moonroof, Sport AT, and Floormats (duh). So far I am very happy. Had it for almost a week and I only have about 110 miles on it (it had 3 when I bought it). Now I am off to Geneva for 2 1/2 weeks so it will sit some more. Eventually I will get to drive this thing :-)

How many miles do you guys drive for a "break in" period?

Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone for all their help. I asked many questions and received a lot of helpful info. I opted against the WRX and ended up saving over 8 or 9 grand in the long run. To quote TEX... "That's alot of Pizza and Beer".

Oh and as far as mods... just a couple of big a$$ dogs in the back for now :-)

Thanks,
dficken.

Nice car and beautiful dogs, man. I usually have my 2 pups in the back of my MP3 also. One's a lab/boxer mix (one year old) and the other is a Shepard/yellow Lab mix (9 months old). Big dogs rule. :)
Congrats on the purchase. Nothing like saving some $$$ for future fun. Now you can put on some sweet wheels and tires, or just save the money and have fun! That's what I did. Haven't yet regretted not buying the Suby. I beat them on a regular basis on the track too. :)

Those are some lucky pups.

don't you think they look so happy in your new p5?

Welcome to the club, dficken, and zoom zoom to you

"break-in period"? 1000 km or 600 miles, so you better do a lot of driving before you head over to geneva, stay at certain rpm (eg. highway driving) for too long is not healthy for new engines.

Aaaah, the beer and pizza always wins! Good choice and welcome to the group. Huge bummer that you're going away right when you got a new car! But think of it this way, you'll have soooo much fun when you get home. And I think everyone here will agree, the P5 is a really fun car.

Have a great time! Or is it business? Well, if so, throw a bone for more peace in the world...we could use it. :)

Congrats on taking the plunge! P5 be-good!

hey, anything is probably better for your car than the 2500 mile cruise from missouri to maryland and back that I made the week after i brought it home. 16-18 hours each way at around 80 can get really boring for an engine.

speaking of dogs, big ones aren't the only ones to enjoy riding. I've had my parents' silky riding with me, and she loves lounging on the back shelf or trying to perch on the armrest

Darn straight. I put in a lot of highway miles, living 20 miles from work. During break-in, I varied the speed and revs all the way down the freeway: 1 mile at 65, 1 mile at 66, 1 mile at 67, etc.

The problem is this: the main caveat to break-in is to vary the revs and speed. Keep revs low, except for small periodic bursts. Freeways suck at this, especially when a person is late for work (who, me?). I babied Bumblebee all the way up to 4000 miles. It probably was overkill, but, what the heck, engines aren't cheap!

yeah, i tried to be good and vary the speed for the first 1k or so,even if only by a few mph. anyway, it was holiday traffic on the weekend and if i was in cruise, i was having to adjust it every few minutes, so there was no real constant rpms

OK I'm confused. So for his break-in period he's driving his P5 to Geneva? Wow - I thought the land bridge that connected Alaska to eastern Russia split up a few thousand years ago. What's that about 5,000 miles? That should get her broken in. Good luck! Wait a minute - let me re-read his post. Oh yeah...nevermind.

Hey new p5er, care to share pics of your stock leather? My local dealer doesn't have any 2002.5 with leather...
