Cold Air Intake Question

I've driven through a couple fairly major mid-western down pours (those who live in the mid west or have been in a mid western down pour know what I'm talking about) on the interstate at 70 mph with my CAI. Not a single problem. I've also sat with the engine running in car washes with the under carriage wash, rocker panel wash.... you name it, not a single problem.

To hydrolock your engine, you pretty much have to SUBMERGE the intake in water. And if you're driving through puddles that deep, you should probably reevaluate your need to be on the road at that time. I bet if I had my CAI sticking out in front of my car and was driving through that same down pour at 70 mph, it still wouldn't have hydrolocked.

haha yes you can go to the car wash, im actually headed there today to wash my car. hydrolocking is definitely a risk, but it isnt extremely high otherwise they wouldnt be sold as much, just be smart when driving in the rain and you should be alright

Thank you both. And Flash I was using my unnoticeable internet sarcasm on the carwash bit.

HAHA! this too funny.
So its pouring rain/snow in calgary, and one of the raods gets so bad it gets about 16 inches of water.
Im in the left lane and the Evo is in the right lane, right infront of this massive lake that goes on for a block.
I say F it and i go through nice and slow, this is in my sisters Protege where i stuck a Short ram in.
The EVO guy says HA! if he can do so can I!!!!

20 SECS LATER! and BANM he aint going anywhere.

So i back up and ask are you ok?( and i was serious, i was being polite.)
Cold air intake sucked up about a litre of water as i see him crying.
He says "F off ASSWHOLE"
than i said" HEY WANNA RACE, HAHAHAHHAHA"

DON'T DRIVE THROUGH LAKES AT ALL

had a crew I work with take our ambulance through a lake and it seized the diesel up quicker than spit. They said it wasn't that deep and they thought they could make it, well that would be true if the air intake wasn't on the bottom of our motors! LOL they got reemed for ruining a $105k ambulance :)

you only notice a intake if you rev it past 3K lol

good bye mpg

haha ya ive noticed that, you love the noise and only at 3K rpm it shows up so i can watch my gas needle slowly go down lol. haha and good advice dont drive through lakes....duley noted lol!

I could drive through lakes, no prob with the intake, what are you guys talkin' about?

Did I mention they're frozen 3 feet deep right now? ahah

I just ended up getting my C.A.I installed today but the setup is a little different of a setup than what I have normally seen on our car. Instead of having it run infront of the driver side wheel, my mechanic installed it in the engine bay close to where it normally is but just to the right of the radiator. I got it installed on a rainy day and he said where it normally goes he saw a lot of water sitting in there so he said if we put it there it would be much better. Ill get some pic up today of what it looks like.

Also I was just wondering if driving in the rain is ok with the C.A.I in. I know not to go through any big puddles and stuff just wondering if rain is ok. And where I could get a cover for the filter. Gunna get the pics in a few hours just at work. lol

Ok heres the pics.

its a clean set up dont get it wrong but most kits go inside the fender, I run it in the rain all the time, no problems at all.

I would personally be more concerned about water with it in the bottom of your engine bay versus having the filter in the wheel well seeing that you have a fender liner in the wheel well versus none in under your engine.

Thats a good point you know becuz i got installed when i was piss raining and when i first drove it my engine ran fine and now after driving on the highway while it was pouring my engine runs rough so im taking it to mazda tomorrow to get them just to run it as a short ram and get them to see if there is any water in the engine.
