Roof mount Bike rack solutions with stock crossbars?

um.............

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4400793&postcount=5

I like the raptor upright bike carriers, probably makes it much quicker to just mount and go. I have road bikes though, so no muddy rooftop for me.

do you use them with the universal factory roofrack mounts they sell for $40?
I think that looks like a good option for the P5 if it is fairly secure.
I'll be picking up a yak rack with two fork mounts and two upright mounts with a snowboard mount tomorrow. I'm trying to make it into two bike racks on two cars.

OK, so here's an update for others looking for racks.

I got some used Thule bike mounts and took a good look at them. Everything looks solid and they are built to last. I reinstalled my stock crossbars and took a close look at them too. They are very sturdy and are made of aluminum just like the Thule mounts. I'm going to simply drill two holes through the stock crossbars in the channel that runs the length of them and bolt the bike mounts dirctly through the crossbars with SS hardware. It will be mounted very sturdy that way. I'll use a metal backing plate on the bottom to make sure it has a nice dispursal of weight from the bolts. Simple, straightforward and inexpensive.
I will also look for a fairing to attach to the front crossbar.

I installed it and will take pics today. I found that the stock Thule allen bolts are just the right length to mount through the bike mount, and then through the stockl rack without hitting the sunroof when it is in the Tilt position, so I still have full functionality.

I will have to drill one hole in the rear bar as well to bolt the rear of the tray down using stock Thule hardware.

There is enough room to mount two bike to the rack so that road handlebars don't touch each other. No idea about Mountain bikes or bikes with disc brakes.

Also, the trays end just before the hatch area so no intereference there either.

Wind noise with trays wasn't all that different than with the crossbars on.

Pics

I'll sell the Thule Cross bars and make my money back so all in all I'm fairly pleased. I'm thinking of putting a "zoom-zoom" sticker on one of the trays where the "Thule" goes just for $h!ts and giggles.

Looks really good & should work good too. Likin the low profile setup. Should be sturdier than the way mine hook up. The back stands up from the factory rack & has less than sturdiest connection I would like. OK, the trays clear the hatch is good but be aware that it will hit the back tire when bike is mounted because it'll go past end of tray. Bad if muddy krusty knobby mtb tire. Watch the wing. I see no problem with front disc clearance issue due to the front tray design & based on spacing in the pics, thinking there could be issue with mtb bars touching especially if you have one with wide bars. Other issue I could see might be a mixed load of cargo box/bike rack or surfboard/bike or kayak/bike where the bike tray might need to be farther towards the side of the rack but suppose you could just drill different holes on 1 side to take care of that. Cool stuff, run widdit.

Saris bones racks

I run a saris bones bumper rack

Is that the Saris Bones 2 or 3 or the RS? I was just on their site and they say none of their racks fit on the PR5 because of the spoiler. I hope that's not the case, it seems like I've read of a few people on various forums using the Saris Bones racks on theirs.

I'm particularly concenred because my bike is prety heavy, at about 25 lbs.

I used a cheapo rear bike rack a few times with no problems. If you mount it high enough on the rear hatch the straps don't touch the spoiler.

Selling Yakima bike bracket 0000-8L-J01

0000-8l-j01.

Whoops, clicked submit too early...

Already sold my Pro5 and probably won't buy another one (just got a Mazda5). Don't wanna just throw away the Yakima bike bracket. Designed to fit around the Pro5 OEM roof rack and hold the Raptor. Don't know if it'll work with any other Yakima attachments. Just about $30 from most websites, I'll sell for $15 and I'll ship. See pic. PM me if interested.

Update - rack is doing just fine. 21lb road bike works fine at 80mph.

Heavy MTB (non-disc) works fine too. Fat tires to large to drop into the tray but can still strap it to the rear. MTB is a bit heavier so I've taken it easy.

I'll add an aluminum plate under the bottom screws soon, just as a way to distribute the weight of the heavier bikes.
