I bought my wife her Mazda 5 Touring back in August of '05 when there were very few on the road. It held up fairly well. The cheap interior plastic was pretty scratched up and the lack of power was a downer at times. The good gas mileage, sporty handling and stylish looks more than made up for it though. Well the good times came to an end when some lady decided to make a left in front of oncoming traffic which happened to be my wife in the M5 carrying my 4 year old and 2 week old son. No one was severely hurt both the Mazda and the car seats did their job. It was declared a total loss. Here are some pics.

Damn sorry to hear any of your family, but especially your 2 week old son was involved! (eek2) Hopefully everyone is on the mend and best wishes to your family. Good luck to you on whatever you decide to buy next.

Your family seems to be doing all right, and that's what matters. Also, thanks for sharing the pics, good to know the car held-up OK.
For your 4yr old I would say is fair to change to a completely different car/model (as a little kid I hated my dad's 2nd Maverick after we had a bad accident on the 1st one, don't ask), but I wouldn't blame you for getting another one, I bought my 06 in July 2005 and I'm yet to find a similar, nice looking car that meets the needs of wife and I. Although sounds freaky, getting a 2nd Mazda5 was a no brainer for us.

Thanks everyone. As much as I'll miss the Mazda it is material and can be replaced. The sinking feeling I had when my panicked wife called me telling me she just got into a wreck with my newborn son and daughter can't be described in words.

We just picked up a Odyssey Touring on Friday. To be honest, with three children it was pretty tight in the Mazda especially on road trips. The Ody is closest to the 5 in terms of handling of all minivans out there.

Agree, there have been several discussions on this and yes, family of 5+ on long road trips can get very tight. Good to know you got a good replacement

Glad to hear your family is safe. Shame about your 5, but as you say, it's material and can be replaced. I'm sure you'll be happy with the Odyssey, I seriously considered one, before deciding on the 5.

, so no Rondo for you guys, LOLGuys this is what I'll miss about the Mazda community. From my '87 RX7 Turbo II, to the '00 MPV and the late Mazda 5 it was always a more tight knit "family". Thanks for the support (group)
Rocket: The insurance company gave me just about $16k for the Mazda 5. It was originally a lot less but they gave me a good amount for the leather.
Wuster: Yes, they are reimbursing us for 3 Britax seats. Even the one my oldest daughter wasn't in apparently has to be replaced as well. Never knew that.
Captain: The car that turned in front of her was a cousin, a Mazda Tribute. Not sure how it faired but it was towed as well.
It was a toss up between a Sienna Limited and the Odyssey Touring. I heard about the crappy mileage on the Ody so we'll see.

I will also say that unless the other driver was suicidal, it was an accident and a case of bad judgment... hopefully they're doing okay too.
My sister-in-law's Civic was T-boned by a guy that ran a stop sign at full speed... they found an open, empty bottle of sleeping pills in his car. We'll never know what his intent was, but he did survive (so did my sister-in-law, minor injuries only) and hopefully he's getting whatever help he needs.
Sorry to digress here, but this $hit happens hundreds of times each day, and you can only thank God when you can walk away without becoming a statistic.

Oh yeah, just showed this thread to wife, she says they are damn right, as the seat may have had structural damage even if it had no weight... and that is why nobody recommends to buy used car seats from anyone unless you know the owners and the seat history (eyeballs)
