Tire Sizes for Stock Wheels?

What size tires fit without any modifications, stock wheels and different size tires? 225/40/18 or 225/45/18 will these work?

According to the tire calculator on www.discounttire.com you should go with 225/45/18 if you want the closest match. 40s will be a bit small. I would not advise going wider than 225 on the stock rims.

Talked to a shop last night and they said not a good idea for 225 on a 7 inch rim. Its not suggested by the tire companies as being compatable for anything smaller then 7.5 inch wheels.

The pirelli neros come in OEM size so I need to research how this tire is on our car since it is an all season which seems wierd to me to use in California. They say its a very good tire in all conditions and not lacking at all compared to a max summer tire but it still seems wierd to me.

225 is fine on stock rims. there are a few crazy guys running 235's on them.

tru-boost..... do yours rub with that size on? I just bought a set of Kumho Escta SPT in 225/45-18 and they rub on the back fenders when I hit big bumps. I'm not sure if it's just that particular tire (every brand is slightly sized different, even if the size is numerically the same) or if it's normal for that size to rub. I hate to roll my fenders, but I also hate to be out $500... I can't return the tires.

Who are these crazies I need a dialogue with them. I have become very fond of the oem wheels (appearance, not the weight) but 235s/ 18 are what I will run. And i don't believe the tire will fit. Somebody prove me wrong please. For some reason initially*, I thought the Mazda wheel was 7.5 and all was well. boo

I switch to 225/45/18 recently (on 8" wheel), and I have some rubbing issues when I had 5 people total in my car. It happens while turning. I've checked on the forums and there are many others with no rubbing.

I see its the back wheels against the back fender plastic (because the diameter is large now). It looks like its not too bad, but I don't want it to rub. I think it might be because my tires are new, and the thread is a bit thicker than other people... but who knows. I think the speedo is 3% off.

Our stock wheels are 18x7
Ideally, you want to keep the 215s on there for a nice and square look. Going any bigger will puff out the side walls.

According to Kumho:
-for 225/40/18 tires, the spec-ed rim is 7.5-9.0
-for 235/40/18 tires, the spec-ed rim is 8.0-9.5

Falken's specs:
-225/45/18 specs a 7.5 (ideal size), and may use 7.0-8.5
-225/40/18 specs a 8.0 (ideal size), and may use 7.5-9.0
-235/40/18 specs a 8.5 (ideal size), and may use 8.0-9.5

I'm assuming the 225/40/18 requires a 0.5" wider wheel compared to the 225/45/18 because the 40 series runs a little wider than the 45 series...?

My current 18x8 have an OEM 225/45/18 and the side walls look tapered...I dislike that look. I like nice square setup, so I thought going to a 235 might fix that...but tires manufacturers spec a 8.5" rim for a 235/40/18. I'm assuming the 225/40 series will be a little wider than the OEM 225/45 and give me that nice square look...?

Can anyone confirm this...

Plus there is too much conflicting info on using the 235s...

I can't help you X but I am going to try a 8.0 width wheel and a235/40/18. I like a little curb protection. So a little side wall puffiness is Ok with me. Thanks for tire man specs!

You know most tires these days have rim protectors...which places the edge of the rim in tire; surrounding the edge of the rim with rubber.
Most Falkens and Kumhos have them...

This is a pic from my previous car showing how the Falken Azenis protect the rim...
I also love that look...I hate seeing the rim edge surpass the tire.

Wow, that is not bad... I guess 225 would be fine on the stock wheel.
I was expecting it too puff out more than that. (scratch)
Do you get a lot of lateral shifting with those tires (can you push the car side to side and see the sidewall flex perpendicularly)?

Do you have a side shot of your car with these tires on? I'd like to see what they look like...

I would say unless you are doing some seriously hard street driving (ie/ autocrossing), you won't notice anything being on 235s.

In a similar vein, I've run 215 Khumos on a 6.5" wheel...no problem at all.

I'm sorry to drag this on but I'm pretty pleased that it has been done. so sidewall deflection might be a handling issue, how is traction, forward motion, braking and lateral loads Would a 35 help sidewall? thanks
