I'm pulling my stock airbox out to replace it with an AEM SRI, while trying to remove a bolt off something with a 10mm socket, I heard a snap, and, well, something broke. What is it?

Sorry about the massive pic. I'll remove it as soon as you guys can help me figure waht it is

that's the purge solenoid
you just joined countless people here who broke it... it's expensive and it's needed!

it broke because improper procedure was used to take off that nut... you can't just grab that thing by hand and try to brute force that nut loose, nor can you just try to loosen it without holding onto it... you need a big wrench fitted over the metal part of the solenoid to hold it in place while you take the nut off...

I have NEVER broken these things doing it the correct way... I usually just use my impact wrench to get it off and on... less PITA

Stupid question, but, how bad did I just hurt my wallet? And, is this available at the local auto parts store?

Or, do I need to order from the mazda dealer?

is that the VTCS solenoid?? purge? what yr is your car? hard to tell without seeing where it is in relation to the rest of the intake

first, hooray for "the man" true to form!!(drinks)
ya, that part is some bucks, not sure the local AZ is going to have that one, you can try them though...good luck! oh, we've all learned the hard way...:)

Sorry, it's an 03 with a 5 speed. So, it is the purge valve? Hmm. Should I even try to start the car? Crap. This is no fun now. As to not using an impact wrench, I don't have one. All I've got is a set of wrenches and sockets.

Poo

And, to those who have chimed in already, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Purge control..Yay, im not the only one...I rigged mine, i pulled out the pointed tip with some needle nose's and put it back on with the little clamp holding it, 15k and no problems...or

I have never broken one...wait...what is that thing again? :)

Thanks to all for the superfast replies!!

Well, I got the intake all installed, and it's done, but, I'm stuck till I get a new purge solenoid.

Dumb question still though, am I safe to start the car? Will I just get a CEL? It's hanging half out of my garage, which is on a pretty steep slope.

it looks like you can get a small length of hose, with a hose coonector and clamp it down at both ends and save some $$

That would've worked, but, just after taking the picture, i snapped the top one off too, so, I'm pretty much up sh!t creek without a purge solenoid to get back downstream

Also, turns out the parts department at the local dealer is closed Saturday and Sunday. Yippiee for me

Man, that sux! I just pm'd you but will post the link for the part here and maybe someone else can confirm that it is the right one.

**edit**Ok just realized the part I linked you to falls under the egr system. There is another solenoid valve listed under 'emission components' but nothing in the list shows?? Since your parts dept. is closed, give him a call tomorrow.

I did this when I installed my SRI too. I broke the bottom half using my air ratchet, I thought I was screwed. But I fixed it as is.

What I did was get the broken piece out of the hose, next I took the solenoid to a bench where I used an adhesive and an adhesive quickener. After it dried, I tested it to see if it was still gonna cause some sort of leak/vacuum. So after I tested that. I used epoxy to cover up the crack area. When the epoxy dries it's a stronger material than the plastic used. When putting the epoxy on though, you'll have to put 1 or 2 coats of the stuff on it around the cracked area.

Also, don't put too much epoxy around the hose area, as you need to put the hose back on and if you force it back on, you might snap the thing internally and after that, you have to get a new Purge Solenoid.

Just plug the lines for now until you get the new one or repair the old one..you can drive it that way..you just won't have the Vacuum leaks.
This is just emmissions related IIRC.
Plug the hoses..get the part..and in the mean time..drive the car.

How is he suppose to plug and go? He snapped the bottom part of the solenoid/hose. I'm not saying that he's not able to drive, but I mean, he should try to get it fixed first w/o driving around. Unless he has to get it to a shop or something.

Hello..McFly...Its a rubber hose....Plug it with something after removing the broken barb from it

You can use a lot of things to plug a hose..a round solid piece of plastic...a Vacuum cap....(made for this) or even a screw...Just something to plug the line..

Its not fluid in there..I am sure its just a vacuum signal for some emissions controls.
It shouldnt hurt anything..but it may cause a CEL..But that can easily be cleared after installing the new selenoid.

is this part something that can be grabbed at a pick n pull . I dont know exactally what it is that is needed because I have never removed mine from my car. But I do have a local pick n pull that might would have it and if not that place then about 20 miles from me is an import only pick n pull but I have not had the pleasure of going there yet.
