Please help - Am I missing my air intake ?

Hey Everyone..

So I have a 01 Protege ES 2.0 litre and I was looking under the hood of another Mazda the same model and age and noticed mine was missing a big black box at the front that attaches to the air filter pipe thing...right now all I have is what looks like an upside down drain pipe where something should be attached...is that thing missing called the air intake or something else because when I search in on the web I can't find anything that remotely looks like it!

If it rains, the water will NOT go straight in there. That piece only creates unnecessary baffles in your intake, so does that plastic pipe that goes straight down.

It also makes the intake more quiet. As for me, I like a louder intake.

Water would be the bigger concern. Check the scrap yards around you (if there are any) you should be able to get it for like 20$ if you pay cash.

Hmm. I never noticed any water. What about the people with aftermarket intakes? They remove that whole system.

ha ha..well I would just feel better if I had one and it looks really wierd without it. I'm not an expert on all mod stuff! I wish i was, I think its missing because the person who had it before me did mods on my car and took them off when he sold it obviously...so I'm thinking he may have had an injen one or something and when he put it back to the standard one..lost that part maybe!

To be honest with you, when I still had my air box, I removed my "snorkle" just because I felt like I got better air flow and a deeper sounding intake. Not to mention that it just leads up to a sealed off hood anyways... I don't see how it even got any air with that thing on there.

I can post a pic of my "intake" later, which is probably what most would recommend doing to a stock setup.
