Headlights!

Well, I was going to tell you to search, but I tried and it wasn't coming up on even the third page on any terms I tried, so here it is, not a how-to but all of the info you need to figure it out for yourself.

cool, man. one questions - when following your wiring diagram for ES -> Pro5 lights, would my low beam stay on with my high beam? or will the low beam go off?

According to TheMAN's post, lows are power switched, highs are ground switched. So with that wiring diagram, the lows stay on.

Just from glancing over the diagram (it's been a long while since I messed with this) they should stay on. The headlights are switched on the ground, as long as the switch is on, they are both provided power constantly from a common source. Unless you lift the ground to the lows, and that diagram shows it as an unswitched ground to the chassis, they will stay on.

Okay, I've read all the posts on Headlights and I have a question:

My sister has a new Chevy HHR and my parents have a 5 Series BMW... both their cars have the "cut-off" line for their headlights. I love this look I know my parents have projector head lights, but my sister's Chevy does not.

Does anyone know how I can acheive this look?

Also, can I buy the black head lights from Ebay that are for normal Proteges and not the Protege 5 and just not put the highbeam bulb in?

Thanks for the help!

Mark

WTF???

when i had my p5 for over 3 years there was a cut off. the fog lights on will throw that off though as there isn't any. there isn't any cut off for the brights.

why the hell would you mod the lights on a p5 anyways? there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. if anything the only thing wrong are the owners.

the protege5 might have some good headlights, but the sedan's are better designed.

quit talking out of your anal sphincter.

i will take the pepsi challange with the p5.

the ONLY headlight that were "brighter" were the bmw xenons. there is a catch...they dont go as fas down the road os the p5 and iirc the p5 hedlights lights up the whole damn road. wether it's 2 lanes or 8. that thing goes deeep to both sides of the road and will light up reflectors like a runway all the way down.

there are pros and cons to having hid. the p5 has very well designed headlights. i drove the basic protege and was glad to get rid of it for the p5. no comparison. the regular protege was a loaner btw.

also physics play a good part of the lighting equation. light does scatter you know. compare a laser beam to a flood light.

Well.. the sedan protege does have a much sharper light cutoff, but the highbeams on the sedan headlights suck.

also, the p5 doesn't have a bad cutoff, it's not like we're talking 900x bulbs here.

I'm just saying my Highbeams are in the trees, and my low beams have a nice beam pattern WITHOUT a cut off line.

i want that cut off line.

yeah I'd love to find out if the JDM sport20 headlamps that came with HIDs have a different cap thingy in front of the bulb.. because I've never seena car with HIDs that didn't have a nice cutoff

I am very happy with my sedan lights, they are bright as day.

Mark, if you want a cutoff, and have enough money, you can contract someone for a retrofit, or try do it your self. I'm researching info and i think i might try it.

I've owned and driven both a P5 and a sedan for almost 5 yrs now, my anal shinctor prefers the sedan lights.

Actually, I think it bothers oncoming drivers. I get flashed by a lot of people when driving on the highway with my low beams on. Always have since I bought this car. And the lights are adjusted properly. My theory is that it appears to them that I am flashing my lights at them when my car is reacting to small bumps in the road, and the non-existant cutoff of my lights appears to be moving up and down, making it appear that I am flashing my lights.

here's what GOOD headlights are supposed to be:
1st pic... my headlights using osram hyper 65/70 watt bulbs
2nd pic... european "P5" H7 headlights (stock bulbs).. something we should've got to begin with!

Excellent pics theMAN. Second one looks just like mine. Mind grabbing me a 12-pack of Kokanee while you're at the convenience store, lol.
