So since You cant find any decent quality workbenches for a decent price in lowes/home depot I decided to make my own. I used 7 10ft 2x4, some screws and corner braces. Its not finished yet, I still have to cut the top for the table and the top for the shelf. I'll be using some inch thick plywood to make these. I'm also thinging Im gonna trim the legs about 3 inches all around because as it stands now its 43 inches high lol. Its also 6 feet long and 2 feet deep. Plenty of room for future projects. It will be going along the left side wall of the garage pic.

Tell me what you think and what I might be able to do to make it better since this is my first workbench.

Post your own if you've done the same :)

The bench certainly has the makings of a sturdy work center. I would have made some different decisions about the contruction however. Here's my $0.02:

1. I would have cut one of the 2x4s that make-up each leg shorter so that the long cross member rested on it. The other would extend to the top of that cross member.

2. I would place a diagonal along the back to keep the thing stable left-to-right. The lack of a real joint between the legs and top, or substancial hardward at the joint, leaves open the possibility to sideways movement.

3. If you're going to have this in one place for ever, you may want to screw the top of it to the wall. This might be over kill but it would really prevent movement and shifting.

yeah, I was definitely plannin on mounting it to the wall w/ some Tapcons. And I was thinking of doing a diagonal brace along the back like you said, so now I think I will hehe.

Thanks for the suggestions (2thumbs)

All in all, not a bad start for under $50 :D

2 x 4's are ftw, i made some speaker stands for my home theatre using 2 x 4's, cost me less than $20 compared to hundreds if bought from a store lol

(werd) craftsmanship > all

hehe luckily my father in law gave me that lovely metal one in the back of the garage picture.

nice job man.
here is what I would suggest.

buy one or two more 2x4's and brace the legs.
What are your plans for the table top?

bench looks good....are you going to paint it or stain the wood?

yeah, I'm thinking Im going to do that now :)

as far as the table top for now it will have to be just ply wood...although I was thinking of getting a piece of sheet metal to cover it.

u should aslo try selling that exhaust thats sitting in the corner. lol(drinks)

well make sure u post pics of finished product.....

for the top have u thought about putting padding on the top.....like some work benches have...or are you just going to leave it with the hard top wood?

no padding, not necessary :)

lol you like my random exhaust pipes eh? they include:
MSP Stock Cats & pipe to axle back section
Corksport(I have a new one on the car) mid pipe that needs to have the resonator welded
Mazdaspeed axleback for the P5...yet to be installed lol

I would throw some limestone on top of that thing to spice things up and maybe throw some planters in the background for aesthetics. Then you are set evilchango.
