oil catch can....

this is a pic of the famous Daedalus' enigine bay...looking at his catch can, is there an advantage or disadvantage in his (chrome) and mine (black)? he had to use sealant to keep his from leaking, on the other hand my catch can hasnt had a DROP of oil since i intalled mine.....

mine goes from the intake to the can and from the can to the valve cover (side location NOT the PCV)

his goes from the intake to the can, from the can to the PCV and the valve cover (side location)

should i re-route my lines?

The way you have it is fine, the catch can is just a way to keep the oil from the turbo the way you have it. You can route it the way he did but there is really no reason to.

its just odd that his catch can was actually overflowing with oil and mine has been bone dry since day one. the amounts of money and mods he has on his car may have something to do with the amount of oil his car uses vs. mine....

From what I have read, the way you have it set up will not collect oil and really does not serve any purpose other than an engine dress up. Routing it from the PCV valve does collect oil so I would re-route your lines. I was changing my stock vacuum lines to silicone ones and noticed oil in the lines to and from the PCV valve. So I used the search here on the forum and did alot of reading. From what I gathered the stock PCV valve is not ment to handle more than stock boost so if and when you up your boost it starts to leak. I upgraded my SMIC and got some hard pipes and my boost increased to 9 without a boost control so I figured that is why I had oil in my lines. So I bought a oil catch can and did some more reading on how to hook it up correctly and in the process came across some info on upgrading the PCV valve to the Mazda Millenia valve which was meant for the supercharged engine and handles up to like 14 psi. So I went ahead and ordered that as well and put it in. Now I am looking for anyones opinion who has the Millenia PCV as well as a oil catch can hooked up to the PCV valve line to see if the PCV valve upgrade is enough or if the catch can still collects oil. I posted a thread up a couple weeks ago but never got an answer from anyone who was using this set up. Can anyone shed some light on this please? If the valve alone takes care of the problem then I am going to use my oil catch can as a coolant overflow.

A PCV valves job is to not let any air into the intake manifold, but to let air out. Having a catch can there is pointless, unless I am horribly mistaken. I have not had too much time to look under the hood yet, but if the MSP has a crank case breather (would probably be a nipple attached to the valve cover) then that is what you would want your catch can inline with, as that will spit out some oil. If you have your catch can in between the valve cover and pcv valve, you might get some oil in there, but it never would have made it to the intake manifold anyways.

im going to re-route my lines to connect with the pcv (both lines in and out), upgrade my pcv valve and continue to use the intake to valve cover hose. as shown but substitue the filter with a catch can.

Why are you using a fuel filter to catch moisture out of air?

thats not my car (just an example) i will be using a catch can enstead of the fuel filter.

The PCV valve lets oil vapor from the valvetrain to enter the intake manifold, but only during vacuum. What happns withoutthe Millenia PCV, is it lets the valve cover become boosted undernieth it, and can piss oil out into the intake.

You need your catch can in between the PCV and the 2 nipples that go into the intake manifold. Leave a small breather filter on the side of the valve cover.

i have a millenia pcv coming from PG in a couple days because i have been reading up on this stuff and i am boosting about 10 psi -12 psi. But i was wondering if this blow by oil problem would leave oil leaking anywhere else. I have been loosing oil in small amounts and there appears to be a leak somewhere because i can feel some oil that has dripped/leaked underneath the tranny...but it has yet to drip enough to leave any sort of puddle under the car....i mean i am not even finding drops, but there is clearly an oil like substance the underside of the car...some even on the cross member.

pics? what 2 nipples are you talking about?

From the PCV, it splits through a T. The other 2 things attached to that T are the nipples to which I refer...

I understand where the catch can needs to go and be set up but I still am not sure about this small breather filter on the side of the valve cover. Any pics or more info?

On the drivers side of your valve cover. Thick vacuum hose. Replace it with a beather filter.

oil catch can is not necesarry if you have milenia PCV Valve?

No it still is, all the Millenia PCV prevents is the crankcase from becoming bosoted and spitting oil out the inlet. Wtill with it under vacuum, you are sucking oil into your engine.

i have both right now, but the amount of oil in the catch can has not increased since 3 months ago when i first put it on....what does that tell me? what is the correct way of having the catch can installed? maybe i have it wrong..

You need the line to come from the PCV, into the can. Then another out of the can, and into the twin nipples on the IM.

Thank you.

umm NO
*what* did I say in the PCV valve thread before?

You have said many things in many PCV valve threads. I am not sure what exactly this is in response to or what you mean by it but I'm interested to know more.
