my headunit went in to security mode and it wont get out of it!

so last night my car battery almost died on me (its what i get for trying to sleep in my car with the air conditioning on and the engine turned off) and the headunit threw a fit. at first it just went to this screen that asked me to type in my security code, which i dont have since i am the second owner of the car and this has never happened before, i tried pushing a number of buttons to try and unlock it or whatever but it eventually just flipped around like it does when the car is off and it wont come back on. i read in the manual something about a reset button, but i cant find the darn thing. has this happened to anyone before? i just want to listen to the radio!

Happened to me too. In order to get it to flip out again you need to disconnect the battery for a minute or two and reconnect it. Then it will pop open and prompt you for the code. If you dont have it you'll have to take it to the dealer and they can get it from Mazda or disable it altogether. Thats what I had to do, they disabled mine. If not you could always upgrade the headunit.

reset button is circled in pic turn on the hu and press and hold with a pin till hu resets.

This hasn't happened to me, but I thought about disconecting the battery when I 1st bought my msp to reset the ECU for a BOV. But I never did it because I was affraid this would happen. I'm pretty sure if you call the Dealer and give them your VIN # they can tell you the security code. That's the way Honda did it when I had my Si. Mazda may be different, but its worth a shot.

...that's what I thought. But when I called they told me I had to bring the car in. I was pissed, but I got a mazda 6 to drive in the process.

i just took it to the mazda dealer (hiley mazda in hurst, texas if anyone cares) and they told me that the previous owner should have written it in the owners manual, which they didnt do, and the only other option was the rip out the headunit and send it to kenwood. they were generally unhelpful and didnt even believe that my car had a security code. my owners manual had a sticker with a 4 number code attached to it, but the code doesnt seem to work. i type it in and then hold down the >>| key for 3 seconds like it says in the manual and the headunit just turns off and the faceplate spins around. i did figure out that i could spin the faceplate back around by pressing it in the top left corner where it bends inward a little. it seems that this indentation is intended to serve this purpose as the headunit just turns back on and spins around when i press it, although it still asks for the security code.

Sounds to me like the Dealer pawned you off on Kenwood cause they didn't want to deal with it. It came factory in a Mazda car therefor the dealer should know how to get that number, let alone the fact, they shouldn't tell you to do it, they should do it for you. Also the stock Kenwood unit on the MSP is slightly different from the Aftermarket Version you would buy. Apparently the Stock MSP Kenwood has a different Serial Number attached to it, so that situations like this COULD be handled by the dealer and not have to be handed over to kenwood.

I know for a fact most Mazda Dealer's hate seeing the MSP come through because none of the tech's know what to do with it most of the time. Unless it is a Mazdaspeed Dealer. Last time my Radio went out, the dealer ordered it, and took is to a outside Car Stereo Installer because they don't know how to do it at the dealer. This post is getting long. End Rant.
