My Cost.....somewhat accurate
(used parts cost for int. and piping)
intercooler-60
random bends of piping-20/30
couplings/clamps-75
bov-40
fabbed bends of piping= free, but would have been like 80$, The charge pipe is crush bent but will hopefully soon be the mandrel aluminum like the rest
air filter- 50
misc-40
totally. + 1

I say best bang for buck is like mine or this other guy out of AZ did he built his own from scratch and it looks great and works great, I bought mine from a forum member and he did the same thing, but had help from a tuner shop and they did a great job...

my cost was $350 for FMIC with hardpipes and a HKS SSQ BOV and the other guy who did his own spent less...
I agree custom is the way to go. How else can you get color matched samco couplers and t-bolts standard? (thumb)

There are always going to be those people who say the part they own is the best. They had great fitment, they had good HP from it, why shouldn't they say it is the best? That is why there are many people who stick up for our part.
The core is the largest around, meaning it will cool better (key to over spooled stock turbos).

The core is held in place by the bumper beam, which we say isn't crash tested. Of course we say this isn't crash tested for legal reasons. But if you think your FMIC and bumper beam together don't provide that 5mph crash protection then, don't buy it. But in the end that is all your stock bumper beam is for, 5mph. This beam has NO sturctual integrety to the front of the car for the engine, or control arm mounts. Look at JApanese versions of many of our cars. They either don't have this at all, or it is very small and acts like a bumper cover holder. They don't have a 5mph crash test in Japan so they don't change this part to something beefier.

Our core is not blocked by 50%, it is very open to the front of the car, and only a very small amount is block. Nothing that will effect performance. This is shown by some of the customers that have posted previous.

The hose clamps we supply are not T-bolts. They are more expensive are complete over kill on this part. The SS lined hose clamps we supply have the highest torque rating of any type of worm drive clamp. They have liner to protect the silicone from getting cut up. As long as they are tightened down they won't come off, and are also much more compact than a t-bolt. T-bolts ar also much slower to remove. T-bolts are not a necessary item for boost tubes unless you are running very high boost, like 30+psi. If is a looks thing then i understand.

I hope that the MSP community sees both people, ones that loves our parts and people that say someone elses is better because that is what they own. I think customers can make their own decision based on features, price, and ease of installation, and decide which intercooler fits their needs best.

IMO the begi is the best bang for the buck. Its not as pretty as some of the others but it gets the job done and is cool to the touch even boosting 14psi on the stock turbo.

I agree 100%. It was easy to install, even without instructions. It gave me a noticeable gain, even though I went from an upgraded smic to this fmic. And best of all you can get it from ProtegeGarage.com. Very reliable business.

I totaly agree with your statement.
The title of the thread is intercooler facts and opinions, and I gave my opinion. Obviosly the person who posted this thread is new to the forums and wanted some input on the topic. My opinion on the kit is its overpriced and not worth the several hundred dollars more it cost compared to others. The biggest advantage of your kit is the larger core. My OPINION is: I view it as being no better because of how much of the core is utilized from it vs. other kits. I'm not trying to bash on the quality of your kit or how well it works or your company in general. I never said my kit was the best either. where did that come from

I believe the price is justified on core size and the pipes being once piece per side. That kind of quality isn't cheap, I wish Protege owners understood this.

All I want is a Perrin CAI. WHERE IS IT?

To give you guys a price range of FMIC's, GReddy FMIC's MSRP range from $800-2,163. Thats for all the popular applications!

Count the number of fins exposed in the perrin vs how many it has.
I counted 7 out of 12....close to 50%

the begi under it exposes 7 of 10 70%

the gigantic bars on the perrin appear to consume another 50% of what is shown.

both seem to have the same amount of fins that any direct airflow will pass across

Are you serious

two things.
(1). Have you actually seen how the core is positioned in the bumper? Its not covered by the bumper AT ALL, it simply fits perfect around the opening. The endtanks are covered, thats it.

(2). Have you seen the stock bumper support? Its styrofoam and a big piece of s***. The replacement was much more sturdy than the stocker by far... but what do i know... its not like I OWN ONE OR ANYTHING.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ What?

This thread is going to be endless.....

I guess there will never be an agremeent, but all those FMIC are nice for sure.
It all depends in your application.
If you are running stock boost Perrin makes no sense, if you have big power it is probably perfect.
If you are just in to get better results at stock levels BEGI, HiBoost or TH SMIC are going to be great.
All the products from the vendors have great quality and I thank them for supporting the protege market.

I also think that even though the FMIC might be covered, air sure does flow in that area either indirectly. Just like air flows in a covered radiator.

By the way, you guys have all good points but it is about the best product or set up for your application. (thumb)
