Anyone running an Accusump system?

I searched and found the usual Oil Starvation threads, but no one specifically mentions running an Accusump system in the Protege.

aside from any clearance issues of the canister, are there any other issues that would prevent me from running one on my MSP?
 
I have one hooked up. I spent mega money in the good hoses and fittings. I'll be swapping motors again this weekend so I can take some good pics for you. I ended up mounting the canister in the passenger floorboard and running the line through the firewall. The only other point that gave me trouble was getting the right fittings to work on the oil filter adaptor on the back of the motor. Everytime I went to tighten it something would get in the way. The fittings were either hitting the alternator, the starter or the oil pressure sender. I finally got it to work, but it isn't pretty.

Damn. Good info though. I've been reading up on it, as i dont think the oilpan is ever going to be made (:()

I'm not sure if the benefits outweigh some of the dangers like overfilling the crankcase...i read about somsone using a pressure switch, so that it only turns on at "emergency" pressure...i guess if i had an oil pressure gauge with warning output, i could set and connect it to that... what do you think xelderx?
 
I have mine setup like that. Canton sells an electric valve that opens when the oil pressure drops. They make 3 different pressure solenoids depending on what oil pressure you want the valve to open. It makes it pretty simple. Our motors idle with pretty low oil pressure so I would get the lowest setting solenoid. I hooked up a switch on it as well so that I could disable the Accusump when I didn't want it to come on. I really only turn it on when I'm AutoXing or driving in the mountains, but the insurance it provides is worth it to me.
 
Just to clarify, you have it connected to a warning output of an oil pressure gauge?

What about doing oilchanges, how does that work?

No...it's not hooked up to any warning lights. The Accusump has it's own pressure solenoid that senses when the pressure drops below a certain level and then it opens the valve. You can see it on the far right of the second pic. I also have a remote oil filter adaptor so my oil filter is under my coolant resevoir which makes oil changes easy. With the electric switch like I have, if you turn on the key with the Accusump turned on (since I have an on/off switch for the Accusump) the Accusump starts pumping oil into the motor since the motor hasn't started yet and the solenoid isn't seeing any oil pressure. Basically it preoils the motor before it starts. Then you just start the motor and once the oil pressure builds from the oil pump the solenoid turns off and the one-way valve starts eqaulizing the pressure in the Accusump to whatever the motor is at. WOT pumps my Accusump up to just under 80psi. To change the oil and get all the oil out of the Accusump I just turn the key on without stating the motor. The solenoid opens the valve and pumps all the oil out of the Accusump. When I refill the oil I put in 4 quarts and then start the car. I watch the guage on the Accusump and start to rev the motor until the guage stops moving. That means that the Accusump is fully charged with the highest pressure that the oil pump can put out. Then I just check my oil level and add whatever amount the Accusump is storing to bring the pan back to full, usually about 2 quarts.
 
Gotcha.

Would you say it'd be worth it for somone like me who occasionaly autocrosses, takes a fair amount of corners on the street pretty hard...

oh and how much did it cost you to set all that up? thanks for the responses man
 
I probably have about $600 in the whole thing, but I used the SS braided hoses which is close to $9 a foot and the AN fittings were between $15-$25 a piece and I used at least 15 of them. I'm on my 3rd N/A motor so for me it was worth it since the car is getting raced even more this year.

my setup was way more complicated than most due to running a relocated oil filter as well. That added at least 8" more hose and 6-7 more AN fittings to plumb it all. If you keep the oil filter in the stock location it's really simple. Mount the Accusump (mine was mounted in the passenger floorboard). Run the oil line to the electric or manual valve ( I used an electric valve since I could mount it in the engine bay and it just turned on with the car). It's worth the extra money to get the electric valve...trust me. Then just run a line from that down to the sandwich plate that goes behind the oil filter.

My setup required a "T" fitting and then a 1 way check valve going to the oil filter relocation kit. That made the sump pump directly into the motor and not through the oil filter. like I said...without the relocated filter it is just a straight shot from the sump to the valve and then from the valve to the sandwich plate.

I was lucky enough to find a race shop locally that kept just about every AN fitting and bulk hose in stock. I made about 5 trips over there before I got everything I needed to hook it up. The car was down for several weeks while I worked out the routing of the hoses and which angled fittings I needed.
