My Dilemma

I was planning on picking up rims some time around August- October but now I think I have to get them early.

Today, I was walking away from my car and I noticed a bump on the left rear tire. It is like a big bulge. It is even noticeable from a distance and can't be safe. I will post pictures tomorrow.

Here's my dilemma. I want new rims. I can't drive stock rims/tires up here in the Canadian winter.(canada) When I eventually sell my car, (It's gotta happen one day(eek2) ) I want to sell it with stock rims.

My choices are:
  • Get rims and sell stock ones. Then buy steelies for winter. (I will have to find stock rims when I sell it.)
  • Get rims, buy winter tires for stock rims.
  • Get rims and keep stock ones. Then buy winter tires.
  • Buy all season tires for stock rims.
What should I do? Also, how unsafe is my car now? Once again, I will have pictures tomorrow.

im sort of in your situation too..only my tires are almost thread-less. I'm buying rims, tires for the rims, and keeping the stockers. when winter comes, i will get winter tires. this is a more expensive route. the cheapest would be buying all-seasons for the stockers.

Here is what I would do....

get your new rims/tires...take the stockers and put them in the garage, or where ever you store things....then later on, buy some steelies with snow tires for the winter.....then in the future hunt for some cheep tires to put on the stockers for when you sell it. if you only have ONE bad tire now....and if you know another protege owner....when they go to get a new set of tires for their stockers have them save one of the tires...and put it on the rim you have with the buldge in it.....NOW, you have your custom rims/tires, a set of steelies with winter tires on it...and your stockers.

That probably wont work for me. I dont really know any other protege owners. Plus this will be more expensive. I like BlueWolf's idea of getting rims and winter tires for the stockers.

Anyway, here's the pictures. The bulge is the size of a golf ball but obviously doesn't stick out as far as a golf ball.

What is the difference between stock rims with winter tires and steelies? What are the advantages to winter driving with steelies?

IF the highway departments and cities in your area use a lot of salt on the roads.....that can take its told on the finish of your stockers.....if they were steelies....who cares.

What about the bump? Is it a "dont drive on that at all" a "you should get that checked out" or a "its fine, get new tires some time soon though."?

just go to some shop you trust and ask them to take a look at your tire. But let me warn you, many shops bulls*** alot in order to get the $$. It's worth a try. That bump looks like a tumor...I would atleast get that checked..

Seriously though, I am going to take it to get it checked out but chances are they will just say "get it replaced (here)".(yupnope)

Get a road hazard warranty on whatever tires you get, it's worth it. My friend has 205/40/17 on his hyundai tiburon and on our way to nyc he hit a nice pothole and put a bubble in the tire like that.. those usually happen with hard impacts. I would drive on it as little as possible until you get the new wheels/tires.

That's exactly what Kal Tire told me. It is from a hard impact and that I should drive as little as possible.

What is usually more expensive: all season or summer tires?
