Switched to 5W-30 from 0W-20

Just had to say i came back to this thread and read through the entire thing again! So here is the thing. It is THIS is one of the posst that originally inspired me to put 5w30 in my BRAND NEW 2025 Skyactiv NON Turbo engine a few months back... So I did that. Instead of putting in 0w20, i changed it out at about 1300 miles for break in and used 5w30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Car ran good.. no complaints really.. But then i began to doubt i made the right decision because I started digging deeper. Found a LOT of people commenting on how their engines , skyactiv and others have gonn 200k , 300 k on a diet strictly of 0w20. .. PLUS i read a lot about how amazing the Mazda 0w20 oil with moly is (and it really is great) Soo....After That interval, I decide to go Back to the 0w20 Mazda oil with moly.. BUT.. after reading this amazing tthread again,. after taking in ALL ive learned, ALL ive read and researched, i am 100 percent convinced now, NEXT oil change after this one GOING TO 5w30 and sticking with it!

I just ordered another five quarts of mazda 0w20 moly oil so it will have to be after THIS next oil change, but maybe i will do an earlier next oil change for the hot texas summer coming up. So there you have it. You 5w30 guys have me absolutely convinced on this now. It took me a few times of going through this thread to drill it in my head, LOL.. 5w30 for me next oil change, then for the life of the car. So my 2025 cx5 will see less than 7,000 miles with the 0w20 before i get to put in the 5w30. So thank you all for your input and charts, and manual pages, philosophy, reason, etc. I was spending way too much time studying this, but iin the long run, I think it will pay off. I must add that BOTH sides of the debates out there in this world about 0w20 vs 5w30 for this engine (and others) have VERY good and valid points. But in the end, the 5w30 wins it for me. Sorry for the novel but just had to come say this on this amazing thread! Im so glad it was never closed!!!!

Next i will have to decide if I will go with with amsoil 5w30 signature or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 (cost not a factor) but thats a debate for another day. Thanks all
Honestly, if you plan on keeping the car for a long time, I wouldn't go past 5000 miles on an OCI. Amsoil is very good oil, 5w-30 Signature Series is what I'm currently using. Oil is relatively cheap compared to a engine replacement.

Now that the CAFE standards are being rolled back I think you're going to see a lot of this, it should be telling if car manufacturers start using thicker oils.
I thought about this exact same thing the other day. I totally agree.

@bojo It it awesome that you're figuring this out from the beginning of your ownership. I didn't look into it until much later on, like 8 years and 150K miles in. 🤦

For the 2024 Mazda CX-5, the recommended oil is SAE 0W-20 full synthetic oil for the standard 2.5L Skyactiv-G engine. If you have the turbocharged 2.5T model, SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil is required. Using the correct synthetic oil is critical for performance and protecting the engine warranty. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Fwiw. Factory would not purposely recommend an inferior oil that would not be the best for the engine as designed. That’s just stupidthink imo. .

Has anyone ever used Quaker state 0W-20 Synthetic Oil? I was thinking about buying bulk or Should I stick with Mobil 1 full synthetic?

Quaker State is the cheaper brand in the lineup with Pennzoil at the upper end. Same company.

I think if I drove thousands of miles per month and had to do a lot of oil changes, the Quaker State is attractive at that price for sure.

But since I only do one yearly oil change, I will gladly pay the $10 extra for Pennzoil Platinum.

I’ve used Mobil 1 full synthetic for many many years in probably over a dozen cars and trucks including motorhomes and Porsches in the factory recommended grades and have never had an issue. I recommend it. Used Quaker state in the 60s when it was very popular. I don’t think their technology has kept pace with mobil1. Just my opinion fwiw

This great thread got opened again. I guess I will jump in here on this comment, because the original poster of this thread is one of my inspirations for finally doing the research and making the switch to 5w30 (from the recommended 0w20) and Im glad I did. DxDave, I would recommend searching this forum. You are simply parroting the manual, which is good info, and useful, but most people here have read that and are very well educated on oil, well above and beyond the manual. There is plenty of discussion on this, but let me be brief for the here and now. . The key word is RECOMMENDED. These skyactiv naturally aspirated engines do great with 5w30 as well (and in my opinion better) So 0w20 isnt the "correct" oil, its the RECOMMENDED oil. These engines are not "designed for 0w20". They are designed to work optimally with 0w20 for MAXIMUM FUEL ECONOMY. The manual says so as well. But the manual ALSO says you can use 5w30 and i believe even thicker weights in other countries with similar climates. So its not that most people think 0w20 is INFERIOR to 5w30 (though some people do) but most people just are aware of the pros and cons and the pros outweigh the cons, in my opinion. Theres a RANGE of viscosities that are ok to use in this engine, not just one viscosity. Using 5w30 is not going to affect warranty. Using 20W50 will, well then you have a problem! :)

I disagree. You are entitled to your opinion as am I. So that’s that.

I finally used up my stock of Mazda 0W-20 moly oil and switched to Castrol Edge 5W-30 oil during the oil change last week. Honestly I can hardly tell the difference after the switch, other than the valve train noise is a bit quieter.

Yes.

Why hello, good to see you back. Haven't noticed any postings in a while. No surprise there about the Castrol in my experience. After switching from 0/20 to 5/30 I tried a variety of brands/types. The Edge 5/30 seemed on the thinner side and got thinner in usage. Got darker faster compared to other oils too. Didn't understand what all the hype was about. At the other end of the spectrum was QS Full Synthetic which is on the upper end of the viscosity range for a 5/30 and it felt like a thicker oil when running. I also tried Idemitsu, Supertech and Pennzoil FS (not ultra Platinum). Last 2 changes were/are Valvoline Extended Protection and it seems like a decent oil. Up next is Valvoline Restore and Protect to see if it makes any difference. I figure the ring packs must be carboned up from all of the shorter hops that have made up vast majority of mileage. After that the plan is Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30. Want to check for easier cold weather starting with the 0W and how I like it. It's supposedly a robust oil with a good dose of esters to keep things clean. Regardless, I plan to keep using a X-30. After not particularly liking the "feel" of the thicker QS, something like a 0W-40 Euro spec seems excessive. Maybe in a hot climate or severe conditions though.

Yes.

When I switched to 5w-30 I started with Castrol, damn good oil, and yes valve train got considerably quieter.
