Buzzing sound 2023 CX-5

I am loving my new 2023 CX-5 Turbo. I’m at 1,800 miles now and so far I have been very satisfied with making the jump to Mazda. However, there is a slight buzzing like sound, almost a super fast click, that is coming from the engine bay somewhere. It changes speed and pitch with the engine, so it is coming from something that is being driven by the motor. I’m not sure if it is some sort of pump, or pulley, or something of the sort. It is pretty faint, but seems to be a little louder than when I first heard it. It could be something perfectly normal, but I thought I would run it by the folks on here before pointing it out to the dealer. It’s definitely not the tranny but it is similar in sound to a tranny whine.

may be turbo whistling (after 1600 rpms) and the fake engine noise from the speakers (but the latter is more prinoinced and only under heavier load)?

Sure sounds a lot like it
This seems to be related to the high pressure fuel pump. The vibration is getting through and into the cabin. Its normal but really annoying. Some people were able to resolve or greatly diminish the noise by adding insulation but I havent found any pics which show where it was added.

Interesting, my 2022 has been producing the same buzzing sound from the very first day.
I noticed this buzzing tonality or pitch changes with the speed of driving. In other words the higher speed you have the higher buzzing pitch is produced.
Does the fuel pump work harder with the speed increase? If yes then this version can be more realistic.

I had the same issue. Visit the dealership it is probably a headlight motor. they replaced mine and it stopped the buzzing.

With 2022 maxda cx 5 we had buzzing sounds from the headlight motor. With my Mazda 2017 cx5 it was a door issue explained here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10206007-0001.pdf

No it is definitely the fuel pump. It’s louder when it is very cold out. In the warmer months it’s almost nonexistent. Considering that I have not had a single issue with this vehicle (other than a minor rattle somewhere in front of passenger door), I can live with the “buzz”. As I have stated previously, our 2020 Accord does the same thing in the same conditions. 22,000 miles in and still loving it for what it is!

Hey Jofo67,

I have the same problem with my cx-5 2023. The sound is pretty annoying and very loud. It’s like a loud mechanical buzzing the follows engine power like you said. I have the non-turbo version and mine does the exact same thing. I was wondering if you got it repaired or looked at and if it’s covered under warranty or recalls etc… Thanks!

Been trying to figure this out. Buzzing sounds like it's in dash in front of steering wheel. Think it's come from engine bay. When I switch into sport mode it's way louder. When I hit higher rpm louder. None at stop light. So turbo?

If its more of a buzz than a whistle, it's probably vibration in the high pressure fuel line bracket. I think there was a TSB that instructed techs to apply foam tape or something similar on the bracket to eliminate the buzzing.

Difinitley buzz. Thank you. I will look into this at my first service appt.

Ya, I definitely have this buzzing noise on my 2021 CX-9 Kuro. Very annoying. I took it to the dealership (Gerry Gordon's) and they told me that the cold weather can cause the High Pressure Fuel Pump to make more noise because of the pressure release dump valve. The cold weather increases fuel density and somehow moisture levels also play a role (somehow). They compared my CX-9 to a number of CX-9s in the lot and they all made the same noise at idle (they didn't test drive them).

What's interesting is that my 2017 CX-9 GT never made this sound. And I assume many others don't hear that either. So I don't really buy that this is normal.

I'm still interested in the TSB that some have mentioned about dampening the fuel line, or it's bracket. It does sound like something is just vibrating. When it warms up a bit I'll take a closer look at the engine and see if I can locate the source of the buzzing sound. Does anyone have a link to this TSB and what's involved "fixing" this? Do we need to remove the HPFP?

Just an update, when I took it to Mazda for an oil change and had them check the issue, turns out it was the entire transmission that was faulty. They ended up replacing it at no cost. Problem is gone completely and never came back. The mechanics said it’s very rare but can happen. I was a little bummed ngl that my brand new vehicle (at the time) was delivered to the dealer with a faulty transmission. This should’ve been caught by some type of quality assurance at the Mazda factory in Japan but ohh well, I’m just happy they replaced it. It’s now April 2026 and haven’t had a problem since, so a few years later now and still going strong so all good! Hope this helps someone.
