What's your engine OCI and what weight do you use. What's your oil temperature? Mine is NA and today it went up to 224 at one point during a long drive.
Currently between 7K and 8K miles. Had a sample analysis done a few years ago and was told that I could go longer. Rarely had to top off in between. I drive 2K+ miles per month and 90% freeway. Been using all major brands of 0w20 full synth around $30. Tried 5w30 once and didn't notice any difference back then. For my current and last round, Royal Purple 0w20 and the mpg has gone up significantly. I was happy at first but then I wonder how thin must it be to achieve mpg higher (35 to 40) than what the factory intended (27/32/29 let's call it 30)? What kind of friction modifier in there works better than LM's formula as an additive (have added that in the past)? Will collect a sample for this round for sure. Can someone else try RP and see what happens? What's your engine OCI and what weight do you use.
In my case atx and engine oil temps are close to each other.
I change engine oil every 3.5k/4mo SuperTech 0W20 Full Synth as it does more short drives around the town (35%hw/65%local).
Record some data and share it if you can.

The plan is to switch to 5w30 and oem filter next. The oil temp is typically 210 for an hour-long drive and over 220 on long drives. ATF temp stays below 200 unless on steep inclines. Coolant temp can be as high as 214 in stop and go traffic. Did you mean using the app to log some data?
I have Torque Pro. Let me check... On the same phone with the same adapter, the Torque Pro app doesn't show any reading for the engine oil temp or "transmission temp (method 2)".Does anyone know how to get Torque Pro to display transmission fluid temperature for my 2nd gen CX-9? I'm using a ELM327 Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and the paid Torque Pro app for Android. The only value I can find for transmission fluid temperature shows no data.
Try the free app obd2 car reader that does show those parameters.Does anyone know how to get Torque Pro to display transmission fluid temperature for my 2nd gen CX-9? Did you have to pay for Pro to get ATF temp? I forgot why I paid for it.Try the free app obd2 car reader that does show those parameters.
Haven’t tried Torque Pro.
I’ve gotten 40’ish mpg on some long drives as well(6-10hr), same oil brand/type/oci. I made the call since the beginning to do frequent oci with affordable oil & filter given the driving the Mazda 3 does.
Next factor would be location weather, I haven’t checked the parameters during the summer yet but now with colder temps in NJ the engine oil stays below 200.
My suggestion is to move up to 5w30 since you do more HW miles and have higher miles, you’ll see some benefit of 30 vs 20 weight oil.
Fluid management is key especially when you accumulate miles fast.
I plan to switch next summer to 5w30 Synthetic as the car will be over 100k miles.

The weather has cooled down quite a bit in the last few weeks. I notice that the coolant temp stays the same while the ATF temp seems lower.
I understand your reasoning behind the short OCI. I may have used SupertTech's dino oil or two stroke oil in the past, can't remember which. I don't mind changing the oil/filter every 3 to 4 months, but every two months would be a bit much.
I accumulated 15+ jugs of dirty oil from all my cars in the last few years. I use the oil to stain the fence, 2x4s, patio furniture, and wood puzzles. In my area, each facility can only take 5 jugs per day, so I went to O'Reilly, then AutoZone, and finally the local recycling center. For the first two, they gave the almost empty jugs back to me. I had to drain them more fully at home before sending the jugs to the recycling center. It was a lot of work.
Here is a csv of extended Mazda PIDs in Torque format that I have compiled. They should work on most Skyactiv vehicles, there are some differences on the Gen7 vs Gen6 architecture vehicles but the tft PID should work with all of them.Does anyone know how to get Torque Pro to display transmission fluid temperature for my 2nd gen CX-9?
