HUD Directions on a pre 2024 CX-5?

Lack of turn by turn on HUD is the biggest and probably the only issue that makes me sad. Is there really no way to enable that? I think I'd even invest in a head unit replacement if that was an option.

I get the turn by turn directions on the HUD if I use Apple Map through CarPlay, but not with Google Maps or Waze. But I do have a 2024.

What are you using for NAV?

I user carplay. I know there is a built-in navigation that puts directions on the HUD. But it's a disgrace from the usability perspective compared to Google or Apple maps. The one I had in '16 CX5 was actually better than the current one

I have a theory, here me out: most people don't drive cars with built-in navigation, much less drive cars with head up display, they use google maps or apple or waze or whatever navigation is available on their cellphones. So when they switch to a car that has built-in navigation and HUD, they expect to see on the HUD the same thing they see on their phones. I actually think that the native navigation system is more reliable than the cellphone, you have a dedicated GPS antenna, you never lose signal like with the cellphones and this is the first example that comes to my mind.

My understanding, at least with iPhones, is that when connected to Carplay they use the car’s GPS antenna. Not their own inbuilt antenna.

Tested this by hiding phones under seats, in centre consoles and in gloveboxes etc and the apps using GPS signal still work normally. Which they wouldn’t if they were using their own internal antenna.

Ive used GPS navigation in boats long enough to know that the GPS antenna needs a pretty clear view of the sky to receive good GPS signals. Have to be careful when dash mounting some units or positioning them under metal roofs etc or you dont get sat lock, or at least not reliable lock.

So, I am not so sure that my Iphone is using the car's GPS antenna when connected through carplay. And I say that because I've noticed numerous times, when I am on the freeway, far away from the big metro areas, I lose the signal and the map becomes blur. Most recent example: I was in St Croix, US Virgin Islands, trying to put an address in the google maps connected to the carplay and it did not work until we got to a spot with a better cell coverage. We had to drive out of that place for few miles until the map would become usable.

That's a different issue. Your phone needs a cellular connection to periodically download and maintain the map picture (and routes), but it may still use the car's GPS to determine where you are on that picture.

Yep and I eliminated the data requirement by downloading the map.

So, I did some reading about this GPS - Carplay issue. It seems that Carplay is using the car GPS when connected wireless. My iphone is connected to Carplay by cable. That explains why I (still) believe that my iphone is using its internal GPS antenna, rather than the car GPS. And I did a quick test. I put the google map on the Carplay. It showed my location, all good. But then, I started turning my phone left and right and sure enough I could see the google map on the Carplay screen moving left and right. If it would be using the car GPS antenna, it should not move at all, am I correct?

phones can position without GPS, using cell towers proximity, wifi spots and other means. So hiding your phone doesn't always mean it lost its location.

No, that's just it using the phone's accelerometer sensors. GPS signals would not change unless you are moving.

Well, THAT's interesting! You use CarPlay from an Android phone?
Yes I do. The downside is, next time a get in my car without using carplay, it will not connect via Bluetooth like it normally does. I have to go in settings and select Bluetooth.

OK, I thought it was a typo, but I guess you're just confused. CarPlay is Apple's tech, only available from iPhones. I think what you mean is AndroidAuto, if you're using an Android phone.
