HUD: Is it worth it?

I was indifferent to it originally....now I dont ever want to own a car without it....

Agreed. HUD is like Xeon or LEDs from Halogens. They don't matter until you have them..
No. LED、HID/Xenon headlights or even the AFS、ALH are safety related features for night driving which help you to see things much better. But HUD has not much to help you on the safety side. We're not flying a jet fighter where the HUD originally is designed for.

Of course I hope the windshield for Mazda's Active Driving Display doesn't have the special coating like BMW's which may cost you $2,100 for replacement!

However, we'd still (unwillingly) pay additional $1,800 MSRP for the GT Premium Package only because it has memory seat which is the only feature we want from the package!

Agreed. Couldn't careless about the HUD, however, would love to have a memory seat. Should've been on this car from the get go, at least in Touring and GT models.

Memory seats are standard on GT and Akera models here along with windscreen HUD

Mazda Canada has done this right! They offered 10-way power driver's seat with memory and 6-way power passenger seat standard on GT trim since 2016.5 CX-5!

Maybe Mazda USA believes they can make more $$$ because the customer is willing to spend to get memory seats & HUD (scratch)

If you care about these features, get it. I did

2-position memory driver's seat
6-way power adjustable passenger seat
Active Driving Display with Traffic Sign Recognition (HUD)
Heated rear seats
Heated steering wheel
Windshield wiper de-icer

I know it should be standard but for $1800, seems reasonable enough for all this stuff.

When I took one for a test drive this past Saturday, I drove without my polarised sunglasses.

I know the brightness/clarity of the HUD might be affected by wearing these sunglasses but if push comes to shove, I do have other sunglasses that are not polarised so I will keep one of these in the overhead sunglass storage box

Surprised how far back the tech goes in the automative sector at least from a development standpoint. I think in jets like late 40's/early 50's.

It's only recent times that car makers are now including this feature

This is so neat! Thanks for sharing. Had no idea this tech had been around for so long. My mom's 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass had an A-track but no HUD...lol.
