- 2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring FWD
Saw an Aztec in black with a nice set of wheels on it. It didn't look that bad. Probably because the black hid a lot of the accent lines, which should be hidden.
MSRP on the car wasn't $19.5KLol - you got yours for $ 22.5 - 2015 model and 28K miles on it, I got a similar MSRP 16.5 brand new for 1400 more. Keep in mind your 2015 could be bought in mid 2014 - so its actually 2.5 year old car - I dont know why this is weird with Mazda.
What do you think similar spec'd and similar MSRP Rav4 resale would be? 18000???? Hahaha.
I will tell you, i would bought that car for 19.5K USD (20.5 K value minus 1000 for it being a rental) - you can check any Hertz listing, they are very aggressive on pricing and price low, If i was buying from Hertz I would get some rental rewards as well - $200 or so.
As per my math - A 19.5K car after putting almost 2 years worth of miles on it - 13XXX is good.
By the way a similar spec'd Rav4 (similar MSRP ) kbb resale is about $700 more.
You keep saying its a toaster but by god you have a lot of expectations from a toaster. I think the real toaster in your house streams Netflix, can double up as a PS4, Blueray etc. etc. And still have a LED counter for the time left with custom design options on your toast.
Same here. 4 years in on my CX-5, 43k miles now. I plan to keep it till it doesn't work anymore so couldn't care less about resell.
It's a good car.
Interesting about the apparent residual values for CX5 there in the US vs here in Aus.
Mid 2016 when I was lining up the ducks to retire, i was looking to buy a CX5 and my plan was to get a 12 month old low km GT diesel. So was searching all the online carsales sites that are popular here.
But was shocked to find that they were selling for damn close for what new ones were selling for. So i ended up getting an excellent deal on the brand new (but old stock) Akera diesel for only about $4K (about 10%) more than the year old version with 20-25,000Kms on the clock. Figured that full warranty and new car was well worth the extra $.
No doubt the great resale value here on the CX5 reflects its position as the #1 selling SUV in the country. Incidentally, Mazda is now the #1 fully imported manufcaturer in Australia, and #3 overall. Not bad for Japan's smallest manufcaturer! Aussies are very discerning car buyers.

My MSRP was probably $26K-ish, so it's worth 50% of what it was worth about 2 years ago (2015 model). Absolute s***.
My 370Z cost me $43K (paid actual sticker). I put 35K on it, and the tires were bald AF, white cords hanging off, and I got like $32K for it in 2014 (it was a 2012).
My Grand Jeep Cherokee stickered for $39K or so, and I got $17,XXX for it 5 years later (2010 model in 2015) with 93,XXX miles on it and s*** broken.
My Mazda with a bit over 50% of the miles the Jeep had on it, and 3 years newer, has identical depreciation. In short, Mazda's resale value is equal to a used condom compared to Chrysler and Nissan. Oh, and Chevrolet. My Z06? I paid $65K for it and got $57K for it a year later (Well, maybe like $54K if you consider I traded for a 370Z I paid sticker on, but that's what loaded 370Z's in GM with an MN6 went for then anyway, trade or not. Sticker or GTFO because they were so rare and selling as soon as they hit US soil).
So, once again...Mazda dissapoints. Thankfully, the vehicle still delivers and I'm as cool with it as one could be, but really, that's limdick. First and LAST Mazda I buy, personally. Light on luxury, handles well and does everything else mediocre, and loses value terribly.

The CX-5 has poor resale and can actually be had at better values than the CX-3 or a Mazda 3 right now, and I am not sure why. You are also talking about a high volume CUV versus cars that are sold at much lower volumes. Your trade in for the CX-5 is pretty much the same you would get with a Nissan Rogue, Rav4 or a Subaru Forester. Expectations are wrong.
50% of MSRP in 2 years is "normal"? That's just bad. Maybe it's because I'm used to more valuable vehicles, but wow.
Luckily though, it answers the mail for me, so it's not a "big deal". Looking at houses about 1 hour from work, and the CX-5's ability to deal with dirt roads and swill 87 octane is nice...
50% of MSRP for a 2 year old with 58k (double what it "should" have) not too far off- see below relevant example
2015 Honda CR-V EX AWD 58k VG: low end kbb trade in 14,5- (pretty sure that's as good as it gets in this class) vs yours:
2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring AWD w/roof,bose w/o tech(guessed)- 58k VG: low end kbb trade: 13,250
MSRP of Honda 26795 (ie pretty damn close) so you're crying over ~1250 vs best in class resale- throwing it out there...
So it LOOKS good. You finally have a compliment for it. I'm floored.
Resale value isn't all that amazing in any CUV. You really should have done twice the research you did before you bought a car. Y'know.... 30 minutes.
I didn't plan on reselling it, so...
Dealers low ball you because they need to turn around and make a profit on your car. Do you not know how this works?
Yes, I worked in auto sales, but I also saw the KBB and live auction data, the dealer was just offering book value. Nothing special, nothing lowball.

WTF?!?!?!? Almost $18,000?!? For a 2014!?!?!? What was that car new? $25? Maybe?
Think that's a fluke?

O! M! G! $23k! What was that? 31?
You want "resale value"... you need to.... RESELL IT. Not trade it in.
I got Private Party retail for my Jeep. Noone is hurting for another compact "just another CUV", is what I think the deal is, but a purpose driven vehicle like a Jeep with a HEMI and QDII, or a 370Z, or a Z06, is what I'm used to, and they bring a premium vs. the "me too" cars, is what I think this amounts to.
It's a datapoint. Nothing more. I'm keeping it until it is either totalled, or costs more than its replacement's note.
Yes- your other rides all had a specialness about them that definitely helps.
But again hell with percentages- your JGC that really wasn't too bad btw: 39->17 that's all your CX-5 money in 5yrs 93k- I like the Mazda in this equation- even without the Hemi.
Warranties (on good cars that don't break) are overratedThat said I was hoping Mazda USA would do the unlimited mileage warranties like they do for the Canucks.
To dougal who said Nissan and Subaru depreciate the same - no no no!
Subaru s**** all over Honda Toyota Nissan Mazda - insert any brand on resale except classics or limited production cars.
Its not even close - and this is in Texas, go figure how this is in North. Its not even close - I mean even the Tribeca with its ugly looks will re sale better than same period Rav4s etc.
I'll keep 3k and take me chances (on a car with decent reliability anyway)- but to each their own..
