Raise your hand if MPG was really a deciding factor in your CX5 purchase?
Anything in this class of vehicle was going to be better MPG than the 98 Grand Cherokee V8 I was driving before. So no, no it wasn't. Not high on the list anyway.
For me, I wanted something higher off the ground than a car, AWD, accelerated well, and had good storage.
Test drove a RAV4 - it was ok, wasn't all that impressed by the interior or exterior. The drive was smooth as silk, but just boring.
Test drove a Sportage - Didn't care for the exterior design, accelerated horribly when I got on an on-ramp to the highway which immediately turned me off to it. Thought the touchscreen was kind of complicated.
Test drove a CR-V - immediately hated it. Interior and exterior were both hideous, and I felt like I was driving a grandma car.
Test drove a Rogue - Again not that impressed by the interior or exterior, but I hated how it accelerated and changed gears. I forget what they called it.
I am not a Subaru guy, so didn't consider them.
Heard about the CX-5, didn't know anything about it, or Mazda in general. My Mom had some piece of crap Mazda car when I was kid that was always breaking down so I never really saw them positively, and I'm not much of a car person so was pretty clueless.
Found a dealership and took one for a test-drive. Even just looking at the CX-5, I immediately liked the exterior design, especially the front and side profiles. The side profile with that swoop was something I really liked (and why I absolutely hate the redesign on the 2017). I didn't like all the plastic in the interior, but I did like that the dash wasn't horribly cluttered like some of the other vehicles, and everything was where I liked it. The touchscreen wasn't complicated like the one I saw in the Sportage, and I loved how the shifter was designed.
They let me take it out on I-70, and I went up some hills, around some corners, etc. I immediately fell in love with the feel of the vehicle and how it drove and accelerated. It was actually fun to drive versus the other vehicles I test drove. In my mind I had made the decision that the CX-5 would be my new car before I even got back to the dealership. Didn't buy that day as I wanted to get my financing in order, but I came back about a week later and bought exactly what I wanted.
I realize the CUV market is dominated by point A to B soccer mom driving. But for me, I didn't want a car because I want AWD and don't like being low to the road. But I knew I didn't want a full-size SUV again either. So the CX-5 ended up being the perfect choice. I enjoy taking it for drives, especially up in the mountains, around corners, etc. and I love it as my daily driver. It's got the power to accelerate pretty instantly how I like it to, and it just feels right. I have fun driving it.
