Having 3 Spare Keys?!?

:
2014 CX-5 GS AWD
Alright, so when mom bought her used CX-5 last November, it came with one key, but the dealer was very nice in cutting and programming a new key so she would have a spare since the previous owners misplaced the original spare. Now, at the end of May, the original owners found the spare key, gave it to the dealer, and the dealer mailed it to us. So now we have 3 keys. The original(lost spare) has a nearly dead battery, however if you put the back of the fob on the start button, the car will start. And sporadically, just pressing the start button with that key in the cabin(not against the button), it would start the car. Sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't. Pressing lock/unlock won't do anything, but the battery is pretty much flat. I heard that Mazdas can only hold 2 keys, and when another one is introduced, it will unpair one key. So naturally, the misplaced key would be unpaired, yet just pressing the start button with the key would work(again, I didn't have to press it up against the start button, the key was just in the cupholder). So I'm wondering if this is true? Can there actually be 3 keys working normally? Thoughts?

I think I remember that you have to deprogram the keys and can have 4 or so active at one time.

FSM states:

"Two or more remote transmitters must be programmed for the engine to start. A maximum of six remote transmitters can be programmed to one vehicle."

"The number of programmed key ID numbers can be verified using the M-MDS.."

The additional key fobs need to be programmed into car computer but can this only be done by dealer's computer system?

Also, how is the third key fob going to work if we have memory seat (also memorizes outside rearview mirrors' position on CX-9 and steering wheel position on other brands) feature like in other regions with only two settings / positions as each memory position is associated with a key fob? European cars have 3-position memory seat and there is no issues having 3 key fobs.

Correct on programming...

I don't know on second Q.

My 2000 Corvette has a button for one and a button for two but if you push both buttons at once you can program a third...

Took the CX-5 in for service today and gave the dealer all 3 keys and told them that the misplaced spare had a dead battery. They replaced the battery and all 3 fobs worked, with nothing needed, no coding, programming or anything. So I have 3 spare keys, each one is 100% functional.

Good for you! That saved you money.

In your situation, dealer had programmed the 3rd key when they cut it. The misplaced key ID is still in car's computer and you only need a new battery for it to make it work, no programming is needed. Yeah, that does save you lots of money as extra key fob and programming aren't cheap!

I have seen the key fob housing for sale. You can replace the cracked plastic and reuse the electronics module from the old one.

Ty for heads up. It's still functional and not an eyesore though. I'm cool with it. Just bitter about OP, lmao

Hehe, oops, did I start something? LOL. When the car was purchased, it only came with one key, but we HAD to have a spare, there's no way we could just have 1 key, because what would happen if we lost that key? We had a very nice dealer, and they not only sold the car at wholesale value to us, gave it a fresh major service, awesome detail, new all weather mats and trunk liner, PLUS gave us a huge discount on 3M and undercoating, and gave us a free key fob. And even more amazing is that the original owners found the key and it made it's way back to us, a 3 hour drive away. Not sure what we can do with 3 keys, but hey, if we lose one, there's still 2 to go!
