No start after engine swap

Last digits are still the same. What makes you think they are different? In 6 years of being on this forum this is the first mention I have ever seen of the cam gears being any different. Internally the FS were no different between the Protege and 626 after 2000, some markets had different cams but for USDM cars the cams, head, block, pistons, crank, rods, bearings, oil pump, etc are all the same. Only difference were intake manifolds and the ignition setup.

srsly. Because they are the same. I'm not crazy.

The older 626 models did use a different CMP and CKP sensor setup and the MSP ECU will not read the 626 cam and crank gear signals correctly, if that is why you think your car won't start. Use the 626 cams but the MSP cam gears, crank pulley and cam and crank sensors.

It won't make a difference but you should extract the stud from the MSP head and use it.

Those are for older 626s. Either way when I said 01-03 I was thinking about the proteges. And since OP has P5 cam gears...

I said earlier it appears to possibly be off by one tooth. I plan to fix it as soon as I am off work in an hour. I'm praying this car finally starts!!!

I think I figured out my problem. The timing belt is on perfectly, but until 10 minutes ago I didn't know the intake and exhaust cams were different. I just installed them in the same order they came in the head. Hopefully it'll run tonight after I fix this!

The car runs now! Thanks for all the help. All I did was swap the cams to the correct sides

Glad you got it figured out, we were all barking up the wrong tree.

You said 01-03 FSDE

Yes, I made a mistake. Sue me. Can't believe you took the time and effort just to point out I made a typo. I am surprised you don't have better ways of spending your time than to troll forums to call people out on their mistakes.

Glad you got it figured out. Cam gears between 626 and protege are the same in but one aspect. 626 gears have one cam pick up magnate and proteges have two.

I am having this almost same exact issue won't start and low compression. I set the timing by the crank dimple on the crank gear and the pointer but when I put the timing cover on it is not on the T it is 2 line to the right? Which is the correct way?

Make sure piston number 1 is at top dead center and cams are aligned like in the photos. I put some tape on a long screw driver and make sure it sticks out of the spark plug hole as far as possible before going down again. Check your timing marks and have a friend hold the games with a wrench.
