Service Bulletin FIX USB playback and SMS Bluetooth! NB1/TOMTOM Only (2012-2015)

I got this reply from my dealership:

Good afternoon Al,

I have just confirmation that Mazda Canada is working on a similar program to take care of these issues. As soon as I have the information I will get back in touch with you. If you have any questions let me know. Thanks.

It is the same b*****p that I have been trying to deal with the past months and I just about had it with these idiots at Mazda. Give me the freaking source code and I program it myself (and yes I am capable). The module is a simple flash update to an eeprom and done, what the hell is taking them 17 months to give me an answer to not such a difficult technical issue? Oh and it is not that others did not complain....

The dealer stated that my Bluetooth module was "replaced" in the fall (no it wasn't - you just reset the radio the factory settings).

Just got mine ordered in Nova Scotia, printed the TSB posted on page 1, called the number and started my ticket, brought it to my dealer and they ordered the part on the spot.

I just got mine done, but I lost my USB drive, so I can't test the functionality yet.

Anyways, I have a question regarding the module part number.

In the TSB it states the part number is: GJR9-66-DH0Z. Is that the new part number or the older, broken part?

Here's my ticket saying they replaced the module:

And when I look at the new module it's showing part number GJR9-66-DH0Z:

The odd thing is it has a date on it of 6/19/2013, and the part number sticker looks like it's tacked on over an old one. The TSB does say to "use an exchange unit" so is it possible that they are refurbing older units to upgrade them to the newer model number? I did the software lookup and my module is running version 7.0.

Had the part replaced - so far, the only major difference I see is that connecting my phone to the Bluetooth works much faster. I no longer have to wait 60+ seconds for it to connect and play music, rather it takes about 15-20 seconds when I turn on the vehicle and for it to play music that it was last left on. As far as SMS text messaging goes, I still haven't gotten that to work. I will need to play it with it more, but unfortunately, I'm unsure why that's still a problem even after the module was swapped.

I had my module replaced last week. For the iphone I had to go into the Bluetooth settings and turn on 'Show Notifications' to receive messages. I can now receive messages (iphone 5s running IOS 8.2), however I can not reply to them. The Bluetooth hotline folks said that Apple will not allow that function so my only options are to receive them or call back the originator from the messages screen. The interface makes you tap on the screen multiple times to get to the point that you can read it (can only read if your car is not moving) or have it read to you. I don't find this very useful since it is too distracting to use while driving.

You got it. The original manufacturer, Johnson Controls, shut down and sold off this business some time ago. According to their site, United Radio specializes in fixing and remanufacturing automotive electronics. This is probably why this took so long - they had to engineer a solution to a problem another company made.

Comments specific to USB music fix:
Got mine installed and now been a week or so. It does now play almost immediately when starting the car. I have 5000 or so tracks on the USB.

IT STILL will take 5-10 minutes to load all songs. The display will show 1/1, but will allow you to go to the next track.
If you are on a playlist when you shut the car off it will still take a minute(much much less than if you were on a full listing) to load the full playlist, but will be playing a song off the the list to start, and I only have 82 tracks on my list.
SHUFFLE on/off will not be a saved setting. So will need to turn that on every time if wanted.

Overall I'm happy with it. The main thing being just having SOMETHING when you start the car. The relatively quick playlist loading is nice, just hope you like that list cause you won't be able to go to another playlist till the whole USB loads.

TSB 04-001/15

US 2014 and 2015 CX-5's with touchscreen radio...

It seems they are just replacing the entire HU's now with a new model? I'm wondering if it's another patch to the problem, or if it's an entirely new head unit.

Of course, this is just a bad April Fool's Day joke...

Do you have further information about this TSB? I can't find anything about it.

Seminole, where is the bluethooth module located? I want to check mine too to see if it's a refurbished unit.

Behind the glove box. Remove all your stuff, squeeze in the sides, and pull it all the way down. Module is mounted behind it.

Thx! The squeezing part turns out to be the biggest challenge.

My label reads:
ASM# same number as yours but REV.08
S/W Rev: 07.00.000
dated 2015/01/23

But the code at top right (AMB/Z/CTA/TA/2012/3/8) still contains the year 2012!

Anyone know what the cost of this part and replacement would be? It's really BS if I have to pay for this being out of warranty. I reported the problem within a week of buying the car brand new. Meaning, the problem existed while it was still under warranty. I have to think I could fight Mazda on this.

Just to clarify something on the USB resume...do you need to be using a playlist for it to resume from where you left off? I generally just play albums at a time.

Thanks to CJnum6 (post #108 above) for listing the limitations of the fix. Even with the limitations I'm also pleased with it (had it done last week).

To Senor Valasco: No, you do not need a playlist for it to resume.

Does anyone know what limitations (if any) there are on the USB flash drive & contents? I used a generic 2 GB drive to test with, and it worked fine. With just 238 songs it only took about 30 seconds to load.

Then I tried a PNY 64GB drive with USB 3.0 formatted as FAT32. I loaded about 8200 songs on it, organized into folders by artist and album. It wasn't recognized at all. When I plugged it in the light on the drive blinked a few times and then nothing. The USB tab on the head unit stayed grayed out like there was no drive inserted. Just wondered if there was some sort of limit on files, folders, etc. I'm going to experiment some more with fewer songs and folders but thought someone here may know something I don't.

I've had no luck with 64GB flash drives. 16 and 32GB both seem to work.

If your car is just out of warranty, try contacting Mazda. They may make an exception, especially if you've been making noise about it to them.
